To be a successful process consultant, you need a combination of technical, analytical, and interpersonal skills. Technically, you should have knowledge of process frameworks, methodologies, and standards like Lean, Six Sigma, BPMN, ISO, or CMMI. You should also be able to use process modeling and mapping tools such as Visio, Lucidchart or ARIS. Additionally, you should have familiarity with process automation and integration technologies like RPA, BPM or API and proficiency in data analysis and reporting tools such as Excel, Power BI or Tableau. Analytically, you should be able to identify and define process problems, root causes and improvement opportunities. You should also be able to design and implement feasible, effective and sustainable process solutions. Furthermore, you should have the ability to measure and evaluate process performance and outcomes using key performance indicators (KPIs) and benchmarks as well as conduct cost-benefit analysis and risk assessment for process changes. Interpersonally, you should have the ability to communicate clearly and persuasively with different stakeholders like managers, employees, customers or suppliers. You should also be able to facilitate workshops, meetings or interviews to elicit requirements, feedback or buy-in for process initiatives. Furthermore, you should be able to collaborate and coordinate with other consultants, project managers or subject matter experts as well as manage change and resistance to process transformation.
