How do you become a personal computer technician?

In my experience, your ability to research and identify an issue helps you become an indispensable technician. You will always need to learn new things and acquire certifications but being able to take that information and generally state what an issue is goes a long way. Once you can identify what the actual issue is, your ability to research will be very important as well. No one is going to know everything but getting experience of how to look up solutions and troubleshooting effectively is highly important. Experience is the best teacher even when it comes to research and troubleshooting.

Immersing yourself in the world of computers. Becoming familiar with the basics of a computer in the physical components down all the way down to the bits and bytes. Take things apart, put them back together and see if it continues to work. Break things down to the individual level where you can see things as a whole and how they work together. Then, once you master the component level, take it a step further. Get used to the programs side. Use Windows, Mac OS, Linux to get familiar with the complexities of the OS itself. Get familiar with the different versions, programs, apps and features. Then, once you master that, take Comptia Certs or ITIL. This will give you mastery of the skills you learned overall.

-Educate and get yourself trained While not always required, having a formal education in computer science, information technology, or a related field can give you a strong foundation in hardware, software, and networking principles. -Build your skills and gain experience Hands-on experience is crucial for success in this field. Take every opportunity to work on computers, both your own and others'. -Develop soft skills Beyond technical knowledge, strong communication, problem-solving, and customer service skills are crucial for success.

in my experience, I learned things by practicing. When I faced problems with my first computer and took it to the technician, I asked lots of questions like what was the problem why it happened, etc. Then based on the answers of the technician I was figuring out things. Then when I faced problems I tried to fix them, asked friends or other people about the problem, and learned the solution methods. Nowadays almost everything can be found on the internet, by asking google you can either get a direct answer or a path to your answer easily. All in all, to become a personal computer technician you need to practice as much as you can. Face problems, and practice solutions.

Being relevant in your field is also very important so get certified as well to back up your technical and soft skills. This makes you stand out to your employees.

Soft skills such as good communication, good team working abilities, critical thinking and problem solving skills, etc combined with technical expertise and skills are very important to be successful and drive hard in computer repair and troubleshooting.

In UK, I think the technical ability brackets are quite unique in that of the support engineers that I encountered around 70% are entry level, 10% middle level, 20% senior level. Usually the job posting are always asking for a step down in terms of technical ability required vs package received, so a deperate senior engineer will take a job paying around middle level because the middle levels are not best qualified for the role. Very few roles actually pay close to what a support engineer is worth so be careful to ensure you are deepening your knowledge vs widening your skillset because there are so few roles that pays for that adequately.

As a technician you need to the right temperament, you have to be able to talk with people in a non-tech way so everyone can understand what is happening. Yes being able to work on the issue is needed but if you can not talk with the customer this is not the right position for you. Its also important to know your limitations, you should never leave a customer in worse shape than you before you started.

Working as a computer technician has taken me to different places, like computer stores and client homes. Sometimes my work hours are regular, but they can also be flexible, including evenings and weekends. Fixing computer issues wherever they pop up means carrying heavy stuff and dealing with noisy or tight spaces. Meeting client needs might mean working on holidays, but the satisfaction of helping others with their computer problems makes it all worthwhile. Traveling a lot and adapting to different environments has been part of my journey as a computer technician.

Your work environment and schedule will largely depend on who you work for. Computers are everywhere. You may work at a School, Hospital, Retail Chain, Software company, Factory, Accounting Firm, and the list goes on and on. Your schedule will depend on your employer's needs. Some technicians work Mon - Fri 8am to 5pm or what some consider "Bankers Hours" and others work 4 10 hour shifts or other schedules. Some are on call, some work overnight.

In London, depending on the workplace, you might notice that 90% of your work can be done remotely yet so many companies still want you to work onsite/ mainly onsite. I used to think this is something that shows the company is not very open change/ modernisation but now I have come to realise it is more so that the management feel like they dont have enough control or they are a bit lazy to log tickets and need that express VIP walk up/ drop everything service.

Now I am working in a big company. I can work in a shop, workshop or companies who need computer technician support. I can work 8 hours a day and I am ready at weekend of extra time working.

This might be the worst part of the profession. It depends a lot on where you work and how critical the job is. In my company, both my collaborators and I have to be available 24/7 for any eventuality in critical systems. But I've also had clients with a low degree of criticality, which makes it possible to have a more suitable schedule. However, no matter what your schedule is, if you like the profession, you will always have homework or experiments to do at home.

Many employers offer opportunities for pay increases in addition to job advancement opportunities. Its important to demonstrate that are you are willing to put in work to advance and that you have are capable of handling work outside of your normal responsibilities. An example would be volunteering for special projects. Make a good name for yourself, it will either get you promoted or get you a good reference when you want to move on.

This is by and large dependant on location. I have seen entry level techs make $10k- $20k a year more than techs with 10 years of experience simply because of where they live. Don't expect to make $52,000 to start. More like $28,000 to $40,000 for technicians with no experience. Even techs with 2-3 years of experience and multiple certifications can be paid less than the median if in a location that doesn't have a demand for it.

As a IT Support Engineer in UK, You are often faced with roles that maxes out at 35k so much so that when you see a role at 45k you think it is a blessing but that is actually still entry level. You will want to specialise and get certified ASAP then change titles to be earning around 70k after 5 years experience.

It is depend on my situation. Totally it is negotiable. I prefer to work hard and earn more money. Maybe I decide to immigrate to another country. In this situation I have enough money to rent a place for living but I must adapt myself to that place.

Always learning, you will never know everything. I have learned over the years it is not about knowing how to fix the issue as it is more about knowing how to find the solution to the issue. learn how to look problems up online and having the understanding of how to apply it to what you are looking at. Under pressure and out of time. I have been in this situation so many times. Stop and breathe take a step back and don't be afraid to test again. Most of the time taking a short cut will bite you in the end, so work on it like you own it and want to show it off in the end. Take your time.

To become a computer repair technician you need to have the technical ability, along with some Certifications covering your ability to show that you know what you're doing. You also need to have a troubleshooting/diagnostic mindset to be able to trace problems down to the source.

Don't be afraid to be a self starter, self taught. I was a self starter back in the late 80's, early 90s. I purchased a home computer on credit, learned all about the OS & hardware by subscribing to PC related magazines & challenged myself by upgrading the OS, hard drive, memory & adding internal components myself. Then I began learning about the internet, networks, etc. If it's something you have a passion for like I did then it will lead you to a great career.

The grass is not always greener on the other side. If you don't enjoy taken things apart and then putting them back together, this may not be for you. You are not going to get rich this way, but you can have a very enjoyable career. I love taking things apart and fixing issues. Seeing the end product come to life and work and knowing I did that.

I recommend prioritizing gaining experiences in the field by doing an internship. Internships are wonderful since you can continue to gain experiences in the industry while continuing to learn the fundamentals or expand on the fundamentals in your internship.

On peut organiser correctement l'activité, on peut éviter de trop perturber les utilisateurs... Plus ont est pro-actif sur la gestion et le pilotage du SI et mieux celui-ci fonctionne, et moins il y a de perturbation de fa?on générale. La formation des utilisateurs est également essentielle, notamment la sensibilisation à l'hygiène numérique.
