How do you become a performance manager?

From my experience, the art of performance management starts from clearly defined goal(s) and objective()s; where everyone one involved is clear of the expectations, the deliverables and the end goal(s). This is then followed by regular checkpoints against those objectives and the deployment of agreed actions to ensure the goals are on track and where off track, that they are brought back on track. My ethos are premised on 4 very simple principles: i) What is the goal/objective? ii) Why are we doing it? iii) How is it to be done and achieved? iv) The specific part each individual plays in the story and the clearly defined expectations of that person/role. This is where performance management becomes fully operational and effective.

Many companies consider performance management to exclusively be defining goals and measuring results. PM, however, includes all what happens in between these stages: planning, follow ups, correcting measures, validating if help is needed or even if the goal is still valid, as well as decision on retention, transfer, or developing employees based on their performance.

Performance - A car can have good performance or a bad performance. To turn the car from bad to good performance we involve a motor mechanic. First is to assess the current performance of the car, see what is causing the poor performance and then in agreement with the car owner fix the performance issue. Advice on ways to minimize the poor performance issue from recurring may be given. This is a simplified explanation of what is Performance Management. Staff Performance Management is assessing the reason(s) for poor performance from staff and having an agreed plan to bring the performance to the required level. Good Performance Management is monitoring the performance on an ongoing basis and not waiting until 'The Car Breaks Down again'
