Score high on theArmed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test. Intelligence Specialist requires the highest scores of all other jobs in the military. Knowledge of history, geography, world politics, etc., is helpful; but as an all source analyst, any specialized and/or general knowledge is helpful; as you may be conducting economics or weapon acquisition studies on a particular country, or doing foreign technology assessment. All of this will be offered in training once you enter the military. The main thing that the military wants to know before you enter the field, is do you have the capability to learn quickly, analyze facts, and can you qualify for a top level security clearance.

While on active duty I found the advantages of affiliating with professional associations, and years after leaving service (and with subsequent careers also in intelligence), continue to actively engage in associations with a nexus to analysis and intelligence (AFIO, IALEIA, IAFIE, IACA, OSINT Foundation....to name a few). Much of this has been consistent with the Intelligence Community Directive 205, Analytic Outreach, which encourages intel professionals to network beyond their environment (organizational policies permitting along with security considerations), to include academia, other DoD components, private/public sectors, law enforcement, etc.

I think rigor and objectivity are two absolutely essential qualities. Military intelligence often consists of piecing together a puzzle: starting from a few scattered information, it is a matter of highlighting an organization, even a tactic or a strategy of the enemy, which by nature are secret. Everyone should have enlisted and served a year under command. This is where Microsoft cannot help. Attend military training, rise in rank. Those that start with delivery to the military, learn from the military, how to command, execute orders and command your troops. Intelligence is about sharing and taking information in and out.
