How do you become a mentor in business strategy?

Additional Tip: Think about your mentorship as a storyline. What's the climax, and how do you want it to resolve? This narrative approach can add depth to your mentorship goals and make the journey more fulfilling for both parties.

When I began my journey as a mentor, I had to introspect deeply about my motivations. Was it just about giving back, or did I also want to learn from the younger generation? By understanding my goals, I was better equipped to guide my mentees and also set clear boundaries.

There are many niches to Mentoring in many and varied areas from professional areas to psychological fields. To select the area where you can affect the most you must be targeted in the field where you have experience and procedures that you can trust the way you will lead it

I believe your niche finds you. I didn’t set out to become an expert in helping specialist contractors avoid conflict. Life guided me that way with some brutal early lessons that helped mould me into the mentor I am today. Tough times produce tough people. My niche became real as my battle scars deepened to the point I was ready to share those lessons. A mentor isn’t someone who simply knows things, they’ve been where there mentees seek to tread and will be well placed to show them what steps to take to avoid some of the pain that comes with growth.

In my years of experience in business strategy, I've dabbled in various sectors. However, I found my passion in startup strategies. By honing in on this niche, I could provide specialized knowledge, making my mentoring sessions more impactful.

What can I offer my mentees? What are my strengths and areas of expertise? What unique experiences and perspectives can I share? What resources and connections can I provide?

Don't do this mistake when finding your niche. - DO NOT arrow down your niche too much. When starting, having a broad field is good and as you progress you can narrow once you established as a thought leader.

This is the most senseless advise I have ever come across! Why would you want to identify your ideal mentee? It is always the other way round...the mentees, seekers, students find their guru. But to firstly set a goal to become a mentor seems more like an ego-gratifying and narcissistic goal, and then to find the ideal mentee sounds rather arrogant! I don't know anyone whose aim in life was simply to become a mentor or to identify their ideal mentees. IF there is no humility, there is no mentorship. Period.

Just as not every mentor can be suitable for every trainee, so also not every trainee can be suitable for a business mentor. First, you need to make sure that the trainee is fully prepared for all the efforts that you are going to lead him. The basis for everything is trust and transparency in the process. If you have identified a trainee that you cannot promote, it is better to give up in advance

I've mentored a diverse group over the years, but the most rewarding experiences were with those who were genuinely passionate about learning. It's essential to find mentees whose aspirations align with your expertise.

On the one hand, it is better not to spread out too much and perfect a number of methods, but at the same time you should have several alternatives, for the reason that not every method is suitable for every trainee and sometimes you are required to make adjustments. Your relationships can lead to lasting alliances and referrals.

I came across people that were promoting themselves as mentors on various topics that refused to answer to a simple question saying: I don't give answers free of charge, if you want to know my view , you need to pay. I was puzzled. Firstly, if this person would've give me the answer, I would've probably build a relationship with him and would've end up paying but he's answer immediately proved me, he has no interest in helping other, he's only interest was money. While I appreciate that you charge for your services, knowledge and time, if you refuse to spare one minute from your time to help someone with no interest involved, then you shouldn't be a mentor. So, before promoting yourself as a mentor, ask yourself why you are doing it?

Mentoring is a two-way street. While you're imparting knowledge, there's a lot to learn from your mentees. They bring fresh perspectives and innovative ideas that can challenge your own beliefs. Embrace this exchange of knowledge. Additionally, always remember that the mentoring relationship can evolve. What starts as a mentor-mentee relationship can eventually become a partnership or collaboration. Stay open to the possibilities.

As a mentee you need to make sure you are open-minded to new ideas and strategies. If you decide to seek the assistance of mentors, listen to what they say/offer. You may disagree, but make sure you LISTEN.

First and foremost, serving as a mentor is a way to help others. There may be the side-benefit of expanding your network, but if that's one of your primary goals, you are "mentoring" for the wrong reason. Doors were opened for you at some point, and knowledge and insight was shared with you by those who did. Now it is your turn to help those at different levels in their careers. It's not about you and your needs. It's about giving back and doing for others what someone did to help you.
