How do you become a lighting specialist?

From my experience, I believe that masterning the lightning comes from a lot of studying and practicing. It is crucial to study from the masters and to understand how you can control the light in a studio. Perfect lightning on a product or on a person, comes with experience and with lots of practice. I always start with only one source of lightning and after I keep adding another and another until I get the perfect shot. I try to be very subtle everytime and to make the viewer curios on how the setup was made.

If you want to become a lighting specialist or expert, the best way to get started is to spend plenty of time analyzing how light behaves. Play with the light available to you. Take ordinary, household objects and place them near a desk lamp. Play with a glass bottle of soda the next time you see a sunset. You can learn so much by simply having fun and manipulating how light moves and behaves. Then play with how your camera absorbs that light. No book is going to teach you what a hands on experience will. Play leads to familiarity which leads to creativity which leads to innovation.

One of the best ways to learn lighting is by using the sun! By using the sun as your main light, it's easier to see and understand how light effect different object or people. On a cloudy day the harsh direct sun is turned into nice and diffused light source with is great to photograph under. Use the morning sun and compare it to the evening sun, you will see two different qualities of light. Which one do you like?

TRAIN YOUR EYE. Pay attention to the sun and the shadows it creates. And how various colors reflect differently in sunlight. 1. This helps me to focus on angles and how to set up the lights to fill dark spots. 2. It also helps me determine which background colors fit what level of light; rather a diffuser or a reflector is needed.

Experience: there is a lot to learn by doing. It may take several years to be put into a situation that forces you to try new techniques. Experiment: Be open to try lighting a different way. You may have a style that always works and you know the results, but be willing to switch things around and accept that there is more than one right way.

Once the basics of lights are clear, try making a combination of multiple lights. Not every time you have a professional light at your disposal but this doesn't stop you from providing a perfect light for your setup. You can use a regular LED bulb, flash light of your phone or something as simple as sunlight for your main source of light. You can use a regular white sheet or foam board as a secondary light source by bouncing the primary light on it. As long as you understand the basics like size, power & angle of the light, distance from the subject and the kind of modifiers used, you can perfect the art of lighting. It's all in the basics.

Try experimenting out of the rules. Take directly into sunlight (mind your eyes). Add deep textures and translucent textures together and move around the light source (for me the sun is best). Remember a breeze can alter your source of light-try using this to your advantage. Experiment-make every shot an experiment with your light source (sounds time consuming but really it becomes second nature).

Photography is a recent development but the inspiration for lighting can be taken from the time of painting. Famous artists have perfected the art of lighting in their paintings. Specifically in the segment of lighting for a portrait. The angle, diffusion, the intensity of lights have been used to make the subject look masculine or feminine. For example: When lighting a female subject, placing the light directly about their head creates a shadow of their cheekbone and nose. When lighting a male subject, placing the light at the same horizon as face creates a masculine look. In Rembrandt lighting, the light is placed at 45?. It makes a triangle of light on the other side of face. This is the most widely used in portrait photography.

Assist. Even if you're the 3rd photo assistant lugging around EQ all day. Get on set with as many photographers as you can : ones who use exclusively daylight, ones who do flashy studio work, ones who use atypical lighting. You'll learn creative ways of using the same tools, understand commercial light basics (beauty light, fashion light etc.)... and develop your own personal lighting style along the way.

Honestly, I wouldn't recommend spending too much trying to "Study the Masters." This seems like it is a pretty generic subpoint. Ultimately, masters of lighting often achieve their looks through use of equipment and studios you probably don't have access to. Also note, lighting for medium and large format cameras is very different from lighting for modern digital cameras, so not all techniques translate. But what you should do is study problems. Take a subject you are having trouble lighting. Find pictures of similar subjects and analyze how those photographers solved those problems. To do this you'll need to already know how to "read" lighting, recognizing angles and sources of light in a photo.

Ask to assist. If there is someone's work you love, as them to mentor you! More often, photographers are willing to share a bit of nuggets to help a new photographer. Look for artists you like. I personally love Annie Leibovitz. Her black and whites will show you what lights mean.

Be an audience member first, and by that, I mean, research and keep that research contemporary. We all have to engage in the ongoing rush of practitioners who are working in the industry. Learn from their mistakes and their victories… but keep looking.

Practice, practice and practice….. the cheapest and most fun way to learn is a simple torch and an egg, with a few sheets of white paper and some black cardboard. Shine the light at the egg from all angles and look at the shadow cast on and around it from the light, diffuse the torch with the paper, bounce the light with the paper and look at how all these interactions expose your subject aka the egg. Once your comfortable with this, practice on a friend with some rented or borrowed equipment… practice is the only way to get better, but you need to understand the basics first.

Capture the same outdoor-motif at different times of a day and also at different times of a year - you will not only create a lot of comparable results (which is crucial to evaluate your work), but you will quickly develop a feel for different moods of lighting which will greatly increase the quality of your work.

In my experience, practice, practice, practice! I attend photography groups, and I have friends that have been doing photo lighting for a long time. I always try to show up when they have group shoots. I learn something new every time out! Practicing on my family, my children and with friends, I have learned so much about how slight changes might make drastic changes. YouTube videos help, but putting it to practice in real-life experience has taught me more than anything. Photo lighting pretty easily translates over to video lighting, in my experience, at least for lighting sit- down interviews. Treating them like a portrait helps to see how to get the most flattering lighting.

At first, I thought outdoor portrait photography required direct sunlight! But once I went outside on a cloudy day to shoot portraits, I noticed a wonderful change. There were no more sharp shadows on the subject's face, and I got excellent results in terms of natural lighting and control. Reaching this point was from having a lot of practice and trying different light modes in nature, which I am very happy to know about!

When I started my photography career. Pre-digital. I burned through a lot of Polaroid. I had a polaroid back from my Hasselblad camera and one for my 4X5 View camera. As a commercial photographer we all shot a Polaroid first to check everything from composition to lighting. You very quickly learned how to light. Made life a lot easier in the dark room, cut back on burning and dodging. I have to say you become an expert in lighting. Most photographers today, never had those experiences. Now you see everything digitally, and that has value. Black and white polaroids forced you to see what your lighting is actually doing to the subject. I became a master at lighting people and products. Now I use digital. But Shooting on film, taught me well.

Apply your skills on real projects, whether it's collaborating with other creatives or taking on freelance assignments. Practical experience is invaluable in honing your abilities.

In my opinion one can become lighting expert with time and experience one goes through with each shoot. But you can start by controlling the basic source of light the natural light. If you understand how to control the fall of natural light on your subject it will be easier for you to understand the fall of artifical light on subject. One should also use reflectors which are one of the least credited source which help while lighting during studio and outdoor shoots. Then post that the person can add on camera flash. And then should go for artificals lights by adding it to outdoor shots and by the end understanding the studio lighting setup. Always start with 1 light & then keep on adding as per the requirements and know what it is lighting.

Hard light exhibits a swift highlight-to-shadow transition, creating pronounced contrast and emphasizing textures. Conversely, soft light features a gradual transition, resulting in less contrast and reduced texture emphasis. Identifying hard and soft light is made easier by acknowledging that a distant and smaller light source produces harder light, while a closer and larger one creates softer light on a subject.
