How do you become a licensed independent social worker?

Make sure the institute you choose offers extensive fieldwork opportunities in its course. Opt for a regular course rather than a part-time or open-school course. Inquire with the institute's alumni, especially if it's a premier institution; they can guide you through the admission process and share insights into future job prospects based on their experiences.

'The very first and important step is 1) to understand the society/ target group (differentiating between what they need and what you think is good for them) followed by 2) observing and getting trained by any relevant organization/(s) in your interest area, and then 3) Doing Intervention via need assessment, planning, operations, monitoring and evaluation, feedback based modifications.' The educational institute that helps you with the above-mentioned three points professionally i.e. giving good field exposure, and being a great platform to connect with organizations/ people that are working seriously on the field will be the best pick.

In Canada, it is best to receive a social work education at a university that offers an undergraduate degree in social work, after which you will need to register with the social work professional college in your province. Some provinces now require you to take an examination. If you have been working in the field for a long time providing social work services without the degree, you may be able to contact the professional college to find out if you may be able to acquire a certain number of hours from a licensed social work supervisor.

Just to piggy back off of what others have said, choose the right college. As social workers we get the best of the macro and micro world. Choose the college that's right for you, the place you fit. Look at the courses, and programs there. Especially look at finances too! Social workers are creative and can make a program work, even if it isn't a perfect fit! A Master's degree is requirement number 1, no getting around it, so choose wisely!

Something to consider is being licensed in more than one state. I’m licensed in both New York and New Jersey. It gives more options when working independently. Also, when going for your Masters Degree, begin connecting with others in the field as this will be essential in the mentoring process. Having a mentor in the field allows for increased opportunities to join networks.

I think in most states you don’t take the ASWB exam until you’ve completed the 3200 post-master’s supervised clinical hours. For example, in California there’s a separate state law & ethics exam that must be taken first. That test is typically taken the first year you’re registered with the board. Once you’ve passed the law & ethics exam, completed additional CEUs, & completed your 2+ years of hours, you then apply to take the ASWB exam.

Something else to consider when taking your exam is the time in-between your examination. What I learned is that although ethically our studies have prepared us "by the book" - real time practice can feel overtly different. Don't be discouraged! Seeking support from other LCSW's or RCSWI's in the same process can help prepare you for the exam. Taking your time with studying and finding your best method of studying can help. If it doesn't go smoothly the first time, that's alright too! At least now you are aware of how the exam goes and you can focus on the areas that need more reassurance. It is all a process that requires patience (similar to working with our clients). Give yourself grace.

"The requirements vary by state" - re-read that! Find the licensing board in your State, my guess is they are all online at this point, and read the requirements. If they don't have an FAQ, then read the Regulations. After reading what you can, find licensed social workers and ask them how it's done. Follow the process as it's laid out very carefully. In most instances if you've missed one step, you've fallen down the whole flight! There are Facebook groups out there that can help, and in all honestly the Boards themselves help, call them, email them, ask your questions. If you follow their processes, you should be golden. Different Perspective: To build the clientele, find your audience and STICK TO A culturally and demographically appropriate marketing strategy to reach them. Build a brand that resonates with them. Host workshops to introduce yourself while giving people hints of what you offer!

Here’s what NOT to do when getting your licensing hours; do not stay in a toxic workplace or under a harmful supervisor just for the sake of getting your hours. If the price you pay in your role is your mental health then it’s not worth it! Be open to always exploring new possibilities and growing your clinical skills in different settings and with various populations. Once you have your license you can practice with all populations so do not be afraid to find a place of employment where you are valued and learning in a supportive environment. You can always find outside supervisors on places like RISE Directory which is a directory of clinical Supervisors in the U.S.

There may be pre-licensure continuing education requirements too, depending on the individual state licensing board requirements.

Be sure to enquire that your place of employment can begin your supervision from day 1. This is to ensure that your hours begin immediately — and be sure to keep your own log.

The third step is to gain post-graduate experience in the field of social work that matches your career goals and interests. You will need to work for a certain number of hours under the supervision of a licensed independent social worker who can mentor you and evaluate your performance. The amount of hours and the type of supervision vary by state, but typically, you will need at least two years or 3,000 hours of supervised experience to qualify for the next level of licensure.

A master's level education is definitely encouraged, and in some places it is required. You will of course need a placement/practicum/internship, and depending on your location, you will need thousands of hours (the exact number varies by location) of supervised experience in order to be able to work independently.

Immediately after you gain initial licensure, or even right before, find out what needs to be done for independent licensure. I wouldn't even trust your supervisor at your job, because sometimes regulations and processes change. Find out what needs to be done right away, so you aren't 2 years down the road and find out your hours don't count. I'll reiterate what I said above: follow the processes and guidelines. Drawing from my personal experience, I faced a significant delay in my licensing process due to a former supervisor, responsible for endorsing my clinical hours, had left the clinic for another job. When the time came to apply for my license, locating her proved challenging, and she was unable to complete the necessary paperwork. This complication resulted in a delay of several months, during which the state eventually permitted the clinic director to sign on behalf of my former supervisor. In Canada, to obtain a degree in Social Work, an individual must get their degree through an accredited university.
