The EMS supervisor plays a crucial role in ensuring emergency care as well as efficiently managing the daily operations of the EMS department.

There are many types of services and a supervisory position can vary greatly. But with that it is extremely important that a supervisor does have knowledge in every aspect of service management. Often times people are put in this role strictly off of years on the department or voted in through a favoritism vote, this is not only dangerous, but can lead to failure. The initial post only has the word regulations in it. With my role with a State agency tied to EMS I can advise that most supervisors have minimal knowledge on regulations they are bound to follow and many times it leads to investigations. Supervisors whether new or seasoned must stay on top of all regulations. Lastly a supervisor needs to be open and honest.

To become an EMS Supervisor, you have to be educated in the medical science field such as Medicine and surgery, Nursing etc. You have to apply or volunteer and be willing to do the job. The job also involves coordinating your team to provide good and quality health services at emergencies.

I believe that first you should study a career related to medicine, then have been in an emergency service which gives you a lot of experience and knowledge. then have a career in emergency services.

This can help you develop the necessary skills in team management, decision-making, problem-solving, and communication. Considering EMS level degrees are relatively new and I do agree it is a positive addition, a qualified candidate without a degree should not be turned away. Having direct operating knowledge of EMS services is essential. If an individual is looking into a position of leadership they should seek out information on the service they are interested, try to find out their processes and operational structure to determine if the position is a good fit for you. Finally you have to be able to communicate and be very open minded. Iron fist or micro-managing style will set you up for immediate failure. Empowerment of your team is essential.

In my opinion EMS supervisors do not need any specific degrees or supervisory credentials. Supervisors should be well respected clinicians, practicing at the highest level the agency is credential at, allowing for that supervisor to uphold the standard of care expected by their agency. Supervisors should also be good communicators, facilitating open dialogue between field staff and upper management. Ensuring universal two-way communication allows for management to make well informed decisions regarding field operations, and field staff to adapt to new initiatives instead of being blindsided. Above all else supervisors must embody integrity, balancing their duty to their subordinates with their responsibility to their employer.

Aside some certifications, I think you need skills such as rapid assessment, prioritizing, organizing, delegating, clear communication and a wealth of experience that makes you competent by the day. Additionally, you should know how to lead. To lead means to serve in my perspective.

Work your way up through the ranks. Learn every position as you advance and become invaluable to your agency. Know what is expected for every role and how to improve it. Remember the things you complained about and fix them. The reasons that you liked a supervisor means you should emulate them. The things you hated are the things you need to make sure you dont become. If you know there is a problem, then you know the solution. People dont leave bad jobs, they leave bad supervisors that make bad jobs.

What worked for me is I did work up the ladder and through the system. So achieving various level of licensure is essential for understanding how you team will function. Getting involved at an assistant level where you can have input into all aspects of a supervisor role is a great step. Joining or at least following nation wide organizations such as NAEMSO or NAEMSP will offer many items for success.

Balance soft skill development, with industry knowledge. Make sure to have an open, mutually respectful, dialogue with colleagues. Take every opportunity offered to further your knowledge base (CMEs, advanced training, etc.) Above all else, ensure you are doing the best job, at your job, that you possibly can. Volunteer for additional work assignments, but also ensure you are being compensated fairly for those additional responsibilities. Continue to be phenomenal clinicians in the field, but remember there is always more to be learned. Above all else, remain humble. Remember that regardless of where in the supervisory structure you wind up, you too were once the FNG. Use that knowledge, show them grace, and teach them to be better.

In addition to the unpredictable and often stressful nature of the work environment, EMS supervisors play a crucial role in ensuring effective emergency care and supervising dedicated teams. Dealing with emergency situations, conflict and crisis management, as well as supporting and leading a team of EMS professionals, requires management, communication and decision-making skills. At the same time, having the opportunity to make a significant difference in people's lives by ensuring quality emergency care can make this job with specifications rewarding.

One of the largest issues I see especially in the smaller departments is the supervisor is expected or tries to be a "buddy" or "friend" with their employees. This can lead to feeling of unfairness amongst the ranks as well the appearance of favoritism. It is not uncommon that you will be questioned on "what do you really do". This can only be answered by your and the services performance. As a supervisor you have to maintain a complete separation of "boss" and "friend". Many supervisors have friends working for them, it has to be understood that at work you are the supervisor. You can ease conflicts by identifying individuals within that hold skills that can support your and your service goals leading to success.

As an EMS supervisor it is your job to make sacrifices, so your subordinates do not have to. You should be facilitating the resources needed for them to do their jobs at peak efficiency; and sometimes this means making personal sacrifices. Be ready to cover shifts with little notice. Be ready to listen to employees air their grievances, and then be ready to take action to improve that situation. Be ready to be the guiding force of your operations staff, and stay humble enough to know when you are in over your head. Most importantly, be ready to set boundaries. This means setting boundaries with subordinates and supervisors alike, in an effort to maintain your own abilities to serve your post to the absolute best of your ability.

EMS, like many other emergency service professions has traditionally promoted team members to supervisory positions because they are very good tactically at what they do. However, many agencies fail to provide the management and leadership training/skill development to realize success. Sometimes success happens, and other times it is a very rough road for the new supervisor…and for the subordinate employees under that supervision. Structure, process, policy, empathy, patience, effective listening, kindness, collaboration, good communication, and accountability are traits/skills that need to be developed prior to promotion.

From my years in various supervisory position what I can share is if you keep at it with a positive demeanor always focusing on the betterment of the service and not letting the few nay-sayers drag the service down you can truly succeed. As a leader you have to do so my setting the proper example. Telling your crew not to do something, but you do it because your the boss will immediately reflect negativity from them. I would identify individuals within my department that seemed negative or not enthusiastic of our goals and get them involved with projects that ultimately would lead to positive change, this always worked well. Finally be fair with all and the biggest thing is if you are wrong admit to it, don't use the "I am the boss" excuse.

If you want to be a supervisor because you want to be better than, or have power over someone, don't. If you want to be a supervisor because you think you can offer a unique perspective into how to improve the agency for everyone, and are committed to a collaborative partnership with field staff and management alike; by all means, and good luck. We need more leaders in EMS, and fewer supervisors. If you are truly committed to leading; and facilitating a positive, healthy working environment welcome aboard.
