How do you become a director of engineering?

A good starting point is to observe your own leader (assuming they are a director), and do an honest self-assessment of what part of their job you couldn't do today. Do they deal with budgets, org design, customer interaction, strategic planning? If so, how do you rate them and yourself on these?

There are three things I consider building blocks in my career to become a director of engineering: strong technical background, business acumen, and people skills. Starting as a programmer was vital because I understood the impact of small architectural decisions on the big picture, which will guide your later instincts. Understanding business as a second piece in the puzzle helped me gain new perspectives and ensure the best engineering decision for the current company's situation. Finally, everything you do needs interaction with others, so understanding people's motivations and fears will help your initiatives gain the support necessary to make things happen.

You can learn something from everyone, but finding those around you to be both a mentor and a mentee is extremely important. As a mentee, one thing I have found to be more important than anything is that whoever is mentoring you doesn't need to be someone that you agree with everything on. It's important to be yourself and not turn into a mini version of your mentor. It's good to have your own perspective on a problem. None of this is to say that you should ingore their feedback. The goal is to learn from a mentor after all. So seek out those that you can learn from, give them respect for their time, and grow with the shared knowledge.

Number one is current and relevant knowledge you have to know what you are talking about. And it should be mandatory that if you hold this position you have to be able to demonstrate that you understand what is going on in the field you are directing. I know a lot of directors that have never even done a day in the field.
