How do you become a compliance specialist?

Compliance specialists in the product compliance field must be engineer, lawyer and manager at the same time. Thus, as there is no education teaching you all, they must be learning on the job the skills of the area they did not "learn by trade". The engineer needs to learn about the law, the lawyer the technical skills. If you are not a fast learner and prefer to stick with what you have, product compliance should probably not be your first choice. Also because the legal landscape is changing constantly. To a large extend that also goes for other compliance fields such as ESG, HR or IT compliance. Constant learning is paramount for any compliance role.

I think the first step is to assess who you are: 1. Are you willing to speak up to uphold integrity with the risk of hurting or offending others even your close friend? If no, then Compliance is not for you. Like it or not, it is part of Compliance jobs. 2. Are you easily offended or being hurt by others comments/feedbacks? If yes, then Compliance might not for you, because you will face a lot of these comments/feedbacks no matter how great you are. It is because there will be time you have to say NO. 3. Do you have high risk awareness - some would say you are too pessimistic? It is an important part of the job. The company expects the Compliance Specialist to see risks that no one else see and flag it up.

In my experience, becoming a compliance specialist starts with a strong foundation in the regulatory environment of your industry. This often means pursuing relevant education, like a degree in law, finance, or business, and then gaining hands-on experience in regulatory affairs or a related field. Continuous learning is key, as regulations evolve constantly. I've found that certifications specific to compliance greatly enhance one's credentials and understanding of complex compliance issues. Compliance is a very broad term and you should be clear about what interests you are pursuing and where you may also have the technical understanding to "understand" regulatory requirements

To my knowledge there is no degree in compliance management (yet). I think this is just a question of time - the topic is far too important nowadays. For certifications it is always the question, what type of compliance do you handle. Are you in financial compliance, in HR compliance, social compliance ...? I am working in the field of Product Compliance, thus I pride myself being certified Product Compliance Officer. Don't waste to much time, energy and money in too non-specific trainings and certifications. The use for improving your knowledge foundation will be limited. The chances are, you already understand the big picture of the Compliance World quite well.

There is no right or wrong education. It is primarily about a strategic and sensible approach to solving problems. This can also include an analytical aspect, which is often a prerequisite for successfully completing a degree programme. A legal background is not the only way to become a compliance specialist. For some subject areas, further training is recommended (e.g. the development of a product compliance management system)

Having pursued a Master's degree in Biochemistry and initiated my career journey in the lab, I've come to appreciate the diverse pathways that lead to a role in compliance. While my educational background has provided a solid foundation in scientific inquiry and analytical thinking, I recognize the importance of supplementing it with specialized training relevant to the compliance field. Transitioning from the lab to compliance, I've discovered that there's no one definitive educational route. Instead, it's about strategically leveraging my existing skills and experiences while seeking out targeted training opportunities to enhance my understanding of compliance principles and regulations.

One of the most important points is experience. Many people can read legal texts, but putting them in relation to other laws and establishing comparability requires experience in the compliance environment. This goes hand in hand with the development of implementation scenarios. As already mentioned, the subject area of compliance is very wide-ranging. This is why you should network with various compliance specialists in order to always stay up to date and to know who you can turn to for advice when questions arise

To excel as a compliance specialist, one must possess a deep and thorough understanding of regulatory requirements alongside hands-on experience throughout the product lifecycle. Staying meticulously updated on regulatory changes is paramount, ensuring a comprehensive grasp of evolving compliance standards and expectations. Moreover, practical experience spanning from the initial stages to the finalization of a product offers invaluable insights into the practical application of compliance principles. This firsthand knowledge not only fosters a deeper understanding of regulatory nuances but also equips individuals with the sensibility required to navigate complex compliance challenges effectively.

Couple of years back Compliance wasn't such an outstanding topic. Thus, there was not entry path directly into Compliance via junior positions or internships. In the field of product compliance people where usually responsible for quality or development or had responsibility for legal topic. Today, this is different: Of course, there are junior positions and the access to the professional compliance field is easier. Gaining experience is possible via internal job rotation programs in different fields of compliance, in consulting companies or simply by changing employer. Network is also an important factor, so keep in touch with compliance experts.

Advancing in a compliance career involves not only taking on more responsibilities but also embracing leadership roles within the compliance team. Climbing the ladder includes moving into higher-level positions like senior compliance specialist or manager, but it's equally vital to develop leadership skills and take charge of the entire compliance team. Handling the team single-handedly provides a holistic understanding of compliance, demonstrating readiness for leadership roles. By committing personally and training juniors, one cultivates a culture of excellence, fostering a cohesive and efficient team, thus making an impact in the field.

A while back my son and I stopped at a red traffic light. A lady crossed the street from the other side. My son asked my, why she is allowed to walk. I cannot recall the answer I gave my son, but I found myself in a dilemma. The lady was crossing the street, because there was simply no car. Being in Asia for 13+ years, I also know that this is no issue in many cases, and I also crossed streets while red light. But for my son, with his young age and lack of experience, may not judge the speed of an advancing car correctly. The red light makes a lot of sense for his case. Sticking to rules can protect vulnerable stakeholders. Stakeholder who may not be able to defend themselves. This is compliance, this is staying compliant!

In the journey toward becoming a compliance specialist, the guiding mantra is to prioritize ethics and do right from the start. It entails strict adherence to laws, regulations, and standards, coupled with unwavering integrity and ethical conduct in every decision and action. Embracing this ethos fosters a culture of trust, transparency, and accountability within organizations and industries. It's not just about following the rules; it's about upholding moral integrity and doing what's right, even in the face of challenges or temptations. This steadfast commitment to ethical behavior ensures the highest standards of compliance and contributes positively to the integrity of the profession.

To become a compliance specialist, typically, you need a bachelor's degree in a related field such as business, finance, or law. Gain relevant experience through internships or entry-level positions in compliance, auditing, or regulatory affairs. Develop strong analytical and communication skills, as well as a keen understanding of industry regulations. Stay informed about evolving compliance requirements. Pursue relevant certifications, such as Certified Regulatory Compliance Manager (CRCM) or Certified Compliance and Ethics Professional (CCEP). Networking within the industry and staying current on legal and regulatory changes will enhance your professional growth in this role.
