How do you become a business analyst?

Every person is a business analyst. Just yesterday, I had a couple of conversations where I explained to my peers how to apply business analysis as a framework for work activities and everyday life. They were stunned! Ato becoming an analyst is to begin analyzing things around you, decomposing the world into the entities and connections between them, and seeing processes and actors. As soon as one starts systemizing chaos, at least in one's head, one's perception of things will change significantly, opening quite a peculiar opportunity on how the world is built and operates. After that, one may start learning the theory of business analysis as a knowledge area with various books, courses, webinars, certifications, etc.

Learn to look at value creation objectively. This is a fundemental process that takes understanding how value is created through various channels. It is very important to understand that people value combinations of goods differently and that understanding how various unique inputs through transformative processes creat different levels of value for a spectrum of various stakeholders.

I come from a healthcare background, but moving towards busines analysis now. To learn the basics, I have been relying on different sources. I don't just rely on one source and prefer to go to 2-3 different sources to gain a better understanding. I started with data manipulation languages like SQL, which I consider to be essential to have a good foundation in data analysis. Lately, I have developed an interest in business acumen. I understand that getting familiar with it is quite essential in the field of business analysis. Even though I don't have a background in business, I am determined to master the skill of analysis. I know it may take longer, but I am committed to reaching my goal.

I started my career as a Quality Analyst. I was working for a core banking project and soon become a go to person to clarify any functional doubts on the module. That was the turning point of my career and started building my domain knowledge on the Banking and Wealth management. While working in a Private Bank, got the opportunity to transition from the QA to the BA role.

They lack knowledge of traceability and cannot properly conduct impact analysis of changes. My experience indicates that many business analysts lack fundamental requirements engineering skills. Therefore, I recommend IREB CPRE certification.

Having a skill is a self-belief that you know something better than the others. When a renowned institution tests your skills and you perform better in that, it means that an institution tests your skills and you passed it. Certification gives a better perspective to others about the way you honed the skills.

There are many business analysts out there without the BA title. If you are one of them and you would like to get "officially" the BA title, you can do the following: 1 - Reflect about your current and previous jobs or studies and identify processes you helped to streamline, stakeholders you had to manage, meetings planned and facilitated by you, research you conducted, solutions you helped defining and implementing, etc. (If you did some of this stuff and you enjoyed it, you are already a BA!) 2 - Write down all the analysis stuff you did and think about what went well and what did not, and why. This will help you preparing for future interviews. 3 - Update your CV and LinkedIn based on points 1 & 2 and apply for BA positions.

Beyond learning, certification, building experience etc. one important thing is a "Mindset Shift". Business Analysis is more of a mindset than techniques. Having the right mindset will help you develop both soft and technical skills required to succeed as a Business Analyst. This mindset shift is about questioning the status quo and assumptions, opening up your mind to see and view things from different perspectives, freeing up your mind to free thinking and conceptualisation, and understanding that Business Analysis success is not measured by the amount of techniques you know but how well you are able to apply them to solve real live business problems.
