Reverb gives a sense of space. It is the result of sound interacting with its environment through multiple reflections, diffusion (scattering) and absorption. A dense and long reverb will tend to reduce the clarity of the sound.

Delays are usually used in two ways - creatively, in time with the music, or with a short time interval to add some "weight" to the track. In either case, if the delayed signal is added too much, it might distract the listener. And if the delay time is not in sync with the music, it will cause confusion and thus not be cohesive with the track.

You can balance your reverb and delays either by using the mix knob in the plugin or, what I prefer to do, is bus out to an aux and place the reverb/delay there. That allows more control in my opinion than the mix % inside a plugin. Also by doing that, you can then blend them to taste, and eq/compress them separately. Depending on your goals, you can use this along with automation to add simple ambience or make something seem like it is getting farther and farther away. I highly recommend that cutting around 100hz and lower on the reverb/delay will help reduce the rapid build up of nasty low end too for sure. But just play with the levels in context and you'll figure it out perfectly!

By removing some of the low end and extreme high end frequencies, and also shaping the mid-freqiencies, we can make sure they sit well in the track. Ducking can also be used to make the dry signal pop through without the reverb or delay masking it.

Some plugins give you a wet/dry signal and processing tools within its interface, such as Waves H-Reverb and its EQ and Compression panels. More commonly used are send to aux tracks, which allow additional plugins (processing) to be used in a chain, and only apply to the effect itself. For either, there are a few steps that usually assist with clarity. EQ: Attenuate frequencies in FX that are dominant in the dry signal. Remove low frequencies to reduce low end buildup. Comp: Use a sidechain option to compress the wet signal when the dry signal is present, and release when it's not. Compress high frequencies (de-es) for warmth.

I typically introduce an initial delay of around 40-100 milliseconds to the reverb effect, ensuring that the leading edge of the vocals stands out more prominently. To further refine this, I apply a ducker to the reverb channel. This technique allows the reverb to swell and fill the space when the singing pauses, but reduces it by approximately 3-5dB during vocal performance, preventing the reverb from overshadowing the clarity of the live vocals. Understanding the existing reverb characteristics of the space is crucial. By adjusting the reverb settings to complement the room's natural acoustics and using decay settings to subtly extend the sound, you can create a more cohesive and natural-sounding mix.

I usually first select what reverb I feel the track needs - large or mid-sized, and would also set up a small room. For delays, I would select the subdivision depending on how it sounds with the song. I would also setup a slap delay. All these will be setup in separate aux tracks, with separate busses for parallel processing. When I mix, I would first setup the small room, and slap delay - choose between the two. Their levels will be kept very low. You will only feel them in their absence. Then proceed to set the other reverb and then finally the delay. I have found that for me, ducking always works for the delays, and sometimes a little saturation as well.
