How do you balance the triple bottom line of people, planet, and profit in international project management?

In international project management, I prioritize a balanced approach to the triple bottom line of people, planet, and profit. Honesty and genuineness form the foundation of my strategy. I believe that genuine engagement with stakeholders, both local and international, is essential to ensure that their interests are heard and integrated into project plans. Company interests must align with the broader goal of sustainability, where environmental and social impacts are minimized. To achieve this, meticulous planning and a contingency mindset are key. I adhere to the "hope for the best, but prepare for the worst" mantra, which means anticipating potential challenges and developing robust contingency plans.

The 'buy in' from local communities is essential to the success of CSR. It's more than just talking the talk of corporate responsibility; it's about generating solutions that resonate with communities and engender authentic change.

Most businesses will likely have a CSR policy whether they call it that or not. The important part is how the policy is implemented. There is not a one size fits all. Each country, state, region, and even individual community stakeholders will have their own perspectives on what a CSR policy means to them. To make a CSR policy effective and meaningful comes through building and maintaining trust with the stakeholders.

In my experience working remotely on international projects from my home office in the USA, the basic building block of corporate social responsibility is individual social responsibility. Rule #1 with such- you, as an individual, should treat others involved with the project with basic human respect. Regardless of however they're different or similar to you, treat them as a valued peer and colleague. Always try on a personal level to break down any caste culture, race prejudice, gender bias, and anything else which does not acknowledge humans as equals. As individuals internalize these actions day to day, corporate social responsibility is a resulting effect. "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you".

In my experience, conducting a thorough stakeholder analysis not only helps in identifying expectations but also in fostering better engagement throughout the project lifecycle.

To integrate CSR effectively in project execution for a balanced triple bottom line, prioritize stakeholder engagement for diverse perspectives.
