In my opinion experiential learning is the key!! You need to first give real life examples with the help of a story and subsequently support the same with the help of final concept eventually. For instance if you start explaining push or pull method of demand forecasting, the same would be best explained to students as per mentioned above.

In my experience I did my studying in a developed country and then working in Africa (in a very different environment and other set of challenges) I found out that theoretical training tends to be very different from the real-life challenges. This is because the theory examines a challenge and teaches you the best way to deal with it, while in reality the situation will be influenced by so many variables that are relevant to the specific environment where one works and that theory cannot foresee. While choosing your training you should take that into account and aim for training that is as close to your reality or at least supply the bridge to your specific environment.

Theory is all about concepts of supply chain.. we can just say it starts with customer demand, raise purchase orders, share to supplier, follow up for delivery, book receipt It sounds simple and straight But in practical, understanding of BOM, understanding of customer demand at sku level, how mrp works in system, how to check mrp output is near to right, knowing suppliers, knowing logistics routing, understanding the manufacturing lead time of the components plays a pivotal role.. I agree with the various training methods that have been outlined and the importance of balancing theory with practice. However not everyone has the opportunity to Practise in their day to day jobs the supply chain skills and principles they have learnt during desktop trainings or workshops or other interactions. Where there is this gap, one thing that has worked for me is teaching. Passing on the knowledge I have received from my own training is one way to ensure I don’t lose the skills I have gained. Teaching also helps me realize what I don’t know and can point me in the direction of what other supply chain skills I need to develop.

The theories need to be understood. But in practice there will be lots of variations without affecting the key principles. Supply chain management in practice has to be workable for a particular organisation and the stakeholders- predominantly the vendors. Proper trainings by practically experienced mentors with real life case studies would be of definite help. The communication have to be transparent, honouring commitment from both the sides (client / vendors/ connected agencies) are important. The SCM professional have to ensure that the vendor companies get their due payments at the right time, to provide good quality services, thus protecting their interests.
