I view asynchronous activities as a way to continue discussions that begins in a synchronous environment. For example, a conversation about imposter phenomenon continues when students provide discussion board posts which include a photo and brief description of a location or object that gives them the courage to push back against imposter syndrome narratives. The group then continues the conversation with replies and reactions. Student feedback on these “linked engagement activities” has been positive. Students feel that they are able to get to know their peers on a deeper level. Additionally, those who are reluctant to share their ideas in synchronous discussions often are more willing to actively engage in an asynchronous activity.

I am extending this, maintaining strong and clear communication by providing monitoring and clear instructions. I've had both synchronous and asynchronous courses, and as a student, it has been the most helpful for professors who maintain good communication, timeliness, and patience. Some students are entering these types of courses for the first time and are not sure how to balance online or hybrid versions of what would normally be an in-person course. I always find it helpful to understand the learners that are in front of me. How do they learn best? Based on their responses I try to create an environment that brings those types of modalities to life. Also, I've seen a transition for many students to enjoying more synchronous activities as it allows for them to have a community.
