How do you balance stability and experimentation in your organization?

Overall, you need to stay focused on your long-term mission or objective, but in all dimensions you need agility. That is not a paradox. Stability requires agility, otherwise you could be toppled over by a Black Swan event. And experimentation for sure requires agility.

The foundation of balancing stability and experimentation lies in aligning on a clear and compelling vision and values. I believe this alignment not only communicates purpose but also offers a robust framework for evaluating and prioritizing endeavors. From my perspective, when an organization is rooted in shared values, it fosters both direction and innovation seamlessly.

My experience is a mixture of small and large organizations - to me balancing stability and innovation in an organization, is about establishing a strong foundation with core values, efficient operations, and risk management for stability, while also fostering a culture of innovation, allocating resources for research and development, and embracing an iterative approach. As a leader, a crucial role is communicating the importance of both aspects and allocating resources judiciously, recognizing that stability and innovation may operate on different timeframes. CFSs and KPIs should be in place to measure progress in both stability and innovation, with the understanding that this balance is dynamic and must adapt to circumstances and goals.

For me it's the same approach as a coach with a team, we need both offense and defense. Defense would be the consistent elements of an org, the policies, procedures, your compliance requirements, risk management. These form the support structure and the foundation with innovation elements being the value adding elements of any enterprise, especially if you think of it as a value chain approach When the constant elements are embedded into the culture and way of life, then the offense can easily explore changes in the internal and external environment. This coupled with a clear alignment with the company's vision and mission will provide a safe space for innovation, knowing that the consistent elements will continue to operate.

From a personal perspective having built a company with an agile approach across all functions, the two, stability and experimentation, are not mutually exclusive. Having the core of the business centred on clearing identified values, mission and impact builds a sense of stability. Whilst adopting agile methodologies across functions enables flexibility in how solutions are developed, problems tackled and operations led.

Empowering your team is paramount in striking the right balance between stability and experimentation. I believe that granting autonomy, coupled with the right resources, not only fosters creativity but also ensures consistency.
