How do you balance leading and following in a team?

Without being a follower a leader cannot lead . At the same time a leader needs to lead and follow together and balance . Situational leadership teaches a leader to adjust as per situations . When to collaborate , when to instruct and when to support . To balance an effective communication among the team is essential where there would be a clarity and focus to reach to the common goal. To equally sustain situations there should an adaptability to adversities and flexibility towards the approach. The team need to support , collaborate and empower each other to share the dignity , respect and boosting the morale to reach the goal either being a leader and also be a follower as and when required .

In my experience, applying an adaptive leadership practice grounded in the core tenets of servant leadership and emotional intelligence can be helpful for achieving an effective balance of leading & following one’s team. Recognizing & conveying to one’s team that you work alongside & in service of them can further support one’s efforts to direct, coach, support, and delegate because it clarifies—hopefully from the outset of the working relationship— that the intent behind one’s actions is towards the team’s greater good & that of the organization that you collectively serve. As the saying goes “Great leaders are not the best at everything. They find people who are best at different things and get them all on the same team.”

I hold an Ed.D. in Organizational Leadership from Pepperdine University. To my mind, leadership is situational. I’m the leader at work and in the classroom. But when my team members produce events, I’m the follower and my purpose is to support them to succeed. If they need chairs set up or the floor swept, that’s what I do. If we’re playing softball and you make me the Team Captain, we will lose; my role is catching and batting ninth. Know your place and behave appropriately. Be the best chair setter upper, floor sweeper or catcher you can be. Embrace your role on that particular team. Besides, it’s fun to not have to be the Alpha all the time.

Be aware of your body language, where you position yourself, and how much you talk. When others try to pull you in to lead or defer to you, rather than the appointed leader, gently give the floor back to the leader. During a training session this week, one of the participants made a great statement about how they prefer to lead, but they also know that they are perfectly comfortable with being a follower if necessary. Be mindful of your team and the desired outcome, and be prepared to adjust your engagement style. Active communication is also important to add clarity and level set for the group.

En mi opinión el liderazgo es una forma de ser y de estar en el mundo no necesariamente un cargo. Hay gente con cargo que no lidera y hay otras que lideran sin haber sido nombradas formalmente. La diferencia entiendo que está en una combinación de factores. Pero hay algo que hace veinte a?os reconozco como semilla del liderazgo. Habemos personas que frente a lo que sucede tendemos a aceptar el estado de las cosas. Y habemos otras que, frente al estado de las cosas dadas, tendemos a modificarlas. Los segundos tienden a tener un comportamiento más protagonista (con o sin resultados positivos) buscan, preguntan, piden, se ofrecen, alzan la voz, colaboran, hacen. Claro que solo con eso no alcanza pero es un buen comienzo. Lo demás se forma.

I agree, but apart from good listener, leader must perform as a role model to foster a positive change. There is also need to celebrate failures and recognise team performance.
