Drill bit challenges and innovations are driven by the increasing complexity and diversity of drilling projects, such as deepwater, horizontal, or directional drilling, which require more advanced and customized drill bits. Some of the current drill bit challenges are to enhance the drill bit durability and performance in hard and abrasive formations, to reduce the drill bit vibration and stick-slip, to increase the drill bit steerability and directional control, and to enable real-time drill bit monitoring and feedback. Some of the recent drill bit innovations are to use new materials, such as nanocomposites or thermally stable polycrystalline diamond, to incorporate new features, such as self-sharpening or self-adjusting cutters, to apply new technologies, such as smart or digital drill bits, and to adopt new methods, such as 3D printing or artificial intelligence.
