Or you can use the sun as your key light and fill in the shadows with a reflector or any large white surface. Direct sun is hard unflattering light creating sharp contrast with strong highlights and deep shadows. When diffused (e.g. through clouds) it is much softer and more flattering but can get so soft that it is too "flat" and a distinctive Rembrandt effect becomes difficult to achieve.

Remember that all of these lighting styles relate the position of the light source to the angle of the subject's face. The position of the camera is not as relevant. It is sometimes best to move the light to get the effect you want, but it is often easier to have the subject move their face instead!

The best way to learn is with a "hard" continuous light so you can see the light with your naked eye and it has distinct obvious differences between the highlights and the shadows. You can then move on to a "soft" (diffused) light source that will give a much smoother transition between light and shadow. And finally, progress to flash/strobe lighting that will need to be set up without being able to see the result until a photo is taken, reviewed, and adjustments made until the desired result is achieved.
