I would add talk to your drivers. They are a wealth of experience and knowledge as they regularly talk to other drivers who have identified risks and have had to deal with them.

- I would also consider age and condition of your equipment. The age of your trucks could mean that upgrading or installing security measures can be more costly or not possible. Breakdowns become a concern also and leaves you vulnerable if the vehicle has to be towed, you have lost even more control. Is that yard secured, where is it? can your driver stay close to it?

Another consideration is delivery or pick up appointment times and how long the loading or unloading takes, does the timing leave the load in a bad situation. Driver preference can lead to issues also, if drivers arrive excessively early does put the delivery at risk, is there a safer place to park.

In my past a company driver had an accident, no other driver was involved thankfully. The truck and load were total losses. The news was present as the road was closed for hours for cleanup on a major freeway. The company is an International known company. The evaluation of the cost of clean up and loss of equipment and product, company was self insured so it all came from the bottom line. We had a small private fleet left that handled day runs. The decision was made to shut it down due to the exposure and potential cost, and liability. Imagine if another vehicle was involved what the cost would have been.

I've always looked at it as a simple but rapidly changing target. from my experiences i can say a few things that help mitigate fleet risks and or threats are 1. investment in comprehensive training provided to drivers and or employees on a ongoing basis. 2. utilization of current available risk assessment tools and or technology. 3. implementation of a routine maintenance schedule on all fleet equipment. 4. Proper fleet insurance. 5. Most importantly and above all company compliance. ensuring that your company is operating within the proper laws, regulations and or legal requirements will help with mitigation.
