While structure and consistency are critical it means jack-diddly if your team isn’t on the same page. Any long term engineering team will have developers come and go and without a clear understanding of the dos and donts, every one of them will apply their own implementations; this is the curse of development. In my experience, the teams that truly thrive communicate in all stages of development from planning to deployment. This can take the form of slack threads, PR reviews, documentation, etc. without a unified vision of how things should be designed and implemented it is only a matter of time before you have engineers drawing straws to see who has to work on “that” feature.

By far my favorite part of development is its design. Users have come to expect quality and in this regard, it’s all in the details. Fonts, colors, animations, interactive elements, icons, spacing and many more are not only a requirement, but must be mixed with great thought. A good example is a nav bar in a mobile app. I’ve seen many placed at the top, why? Placed at the bottom allows access to the utility with one hand. Additionally, I’ve seen nav bars with 5 or 6 buttons, I say again, why? Screen real-estate is valuable and many fail to realize this. Guide the user strategically, each screen should be distinct in its objective, don’t cram everything into one screen. To put it simply, give your users a map before you put em in the forest.
