For me there are some previous steps that must be taken, it is necessary to create an adequate catalog of services and, as far as possible, using an ITSM tool. In the services catalog we will also determine with the stakeholders objectives, expectations and all this must then be crossed with the corporate strategy and resources, becasuse normally each business area will understand that theirs is the most priority! This will allow us to determine service level agreements (SLAs) and finally we can create our indicators to understand the behavior of the services through KPIs.

I think it’s important to maintain a network of peers from organizations similar to ours. For example, if we’re a government agency then obviously it’ll be good to network with peers from other government agencies. If our IT deals with a lot of medical data, then it may be useful to build a network with the healthcare institutions since they would know a lot about protecting medical data. And so on. Maintaining such networks would enable us to pace one another, compare and learn, and even benchmark. Hands up, those of you who have never been asked by your CEO or COO a question that looks like “what are the rest doing?”
