In my experience we always followed the Goal-Question-Metrics approach. So the metrics you want to track should be aligned with what you want to achieve by tracking the metrics. Purpose of tracking metrics is to improve on the identified area like defects rejection, test case effectiveness. Start with Goal, next ask questions as to what is the purpose, then define what metrics to use and start tracking them.
Analyzing test metrics involves a systematic approach to derive meaningful insights. I begin by identifying key metrics aligned with project goals—such as test coverage, defect density, and test execution time. I use tools like test management platforms or spreadsheets to gather and organize data efficiently. Next, I interpret trends over time, comparing current metrics against historical benchmarks to gauge progress and identify areas needing improvement. Visualizing data through charts or dashboards enhances clarity and facilitates communication with stakeholders.
