This is a much better option for people who are just starting to dive into the technical side of website testing. Lighthouse provides information that is presented in a much more user-friendly way, and unlike WebPageTest it’s completely free to use while still providing you with all the relevant data.

To analyze your web design with WebPageTest, you must first go to the website and enter the URL of the web page you wish to test. Then, select the test location, browser, device, and connection speed from the available options. After clicking on Start Test, wait for the results to show. Something to keep in mind while using WebPageTest is that you have to pick a location that is the closest to your users. If this location isn’t offered in the standard menu, you can change it using advanced configuration. Some of the most important things to pay attention to once you get your results are the Speed Index and the Time to First Byte. Also, make sure to choose the “Content” segment on the drop-down menu after getting your results to see what is taking up the majority of the loading space on your website. The downside of WebPageTest is that some insights it offers are locked behind a paywall.

I would definitely recommend Lighthouse over WPT for most users, because of its ease of use and the fact that it’s completely free to use. An important thing to consider is that both of these are automated tools and that they can sometimes make mistakes and be wrong when presenting data, so definitely keep that in mind.
