How do you align your cybersecurity training with industry standards?

Performing gap analysis and conducting maturity assessment to evaluate the current cybersecurity posture is very paramount. Basis that, one can understand what skill gaps are there that can be bridged to enhance the information security skills and competencies of the resources working in the information security program.

Aligning cybersecurity training with industry standards is very important. What i have learned from my experience till now is very vast learning. Here's a step-by-step approach to achieve this alignment: 1. Identify Relevant Industry Standards which suits your role like ISO 27001, NIST Cybersecurity Framework, PCI DSS, and GDPR. 2. You must assess your current cybersecurity skills against the requirements. 3. Hands-on Practice: Get a change to get practicle training in your current organization. 4. Cyber Security skills and inovations are happening everyday and you have to stay udated. 5. Regular Assessment: Do regular assessment of your progress in cyber secuirty. 6. Continuous Learning to to stay updated on new threats, technologies.

My perspective -Align your career and create a roadmap -Create a clear plan and start spending quality time in learning - Focus more on concept base learning and create more used case scenarios - Get mentoring from right people from Industry (make sure you give them enough open credits for the time they spend) - When you feel you are ready give Exam Above all should be sequentially followed however the fact is we follow upside down :-( Certification should be your last phase of your specific skill level to assess what you have learnt and knowledge gained Try applying your skills in your work profile so you can see a clearer path of growth to move upward in your career.

Develop Soft Skills Alongside Technical Acumen While diving deep into technicalities and certifications, also focus on developing soft skills like effective communication and problem-solving. Cybersecurity isn't just about defending against attacks; it's about conveying risks and strategies clearly to non-technical stakeholders. Participate in Cybersecurity Communities Join cybersecurity forums, newsletters, or social media groups to keep yourself updated. These platforms often share real-world challenges and solutions that you won't find in your regular training modules. These insights can be incredibly valuable in understanding how to apply your training in the real world.

Certifications are good. They do just as described, they prove that you have the level of knowledge necessary to gain the certification. They also show commitment to a career path. Just remember to sprinkle it with relevant experience if you don’t have it, even if it is on your own. Got a CEH? Then participate in CTFs held by organizations or build a Burp suite install and bang away on test sites. Put that on your resume! Cyber security leaders want to see any experience, not just work related. The value you have to offer is enhanced by certifications, not created by them. So make sure you’re not a “paper (insert very name here)” by actually doing something, anything , relevant to that certification.

I was in GRC and IT audit and i had clarity in my mind to go for Cyber Security certification to stay with the trend. So i had chosen ISO 27001, CISSP as major certs.

Jumping to certifications might not be the right path depending on where you are in your career. Above all else, Certifications are a financial investment. You need to weigh in the benefits before jumping to pay the costs. Early on in your career, I would say focus on education and experience. Certifications can follow.

This can be the most challenging one for a couple or reasons. Most online material (blogs, videos, labs) get obsolete/stale over time. Couple of points to keep in mind before selecting an online resource: 1. Author: The author of the course should have relevant experience in the domain. Look for their work experience on Linkedin 2. Reputation of Platform: Some platforms have strict quality control on who are allowed to create content, while for others it is open market. Goes without saying that platforms with QCs are better 3. Learner Feedback: Often underrated way of getting to know course quality.

Of course this is very important aspect of learning. I have learned from online resources and online videos to get more insights.

I have practiced my skills in my previous organizations where i have received much exposure with team members and have also done some tests in my home as well.

After practicing much and getting some real hands on experience in various organizations, it was time for me to write different certification exams.

And of course this is not the end as Cyber Security is a continuous learning path as this is evolving everyday. I had to be updated so i joined some online platforms who shares their day to day real experience.
