1 What is exposure value?

It is helpful to understand how the EV system works. Each ascending EV number represents a degree of exposure that is twice the amount of light than the previous one. EV 3 is twice the amount of exposure than EV 2. EV 1 is 1/2 the level of exposure of EV 2. Each number represents What is called a full stop. 1 second is a full stop more, or twice the exposure of 1/2 second. f11, on the other hand allows twice the amount of light to hit the sensor than f16. (1/16) One stop in sensitivity is logical. 100 ISO is twice as sensitive as 50 ISO. 400 ISO is 4 times as sensitive as 100. In the same lighting situation, a change of sensitivity, aperture or shuttle speed will require an equal change in one of the three settings.

Shutter speed limitations can often be subjective to your lens. You can always follow the rule of thumb of at least doubling your shutter speed based on your focal length. For example, if your focal length is 24mm, your shutter speed should be at least 1/50 to counter motion blur. For 50mm, shutter speed would be at least 1/100, and so on. That said, everything about shutter speed may change if and when you are ever using flash/strobe. There are other variables that come into play with flash but, generally, human movement is a lot easier to control.

Consider how you want the tonal values to fall i.e. white walls should be white. Meters, even modern matrix ones, tend to want everything to be 18% grey (sometimes called Middle Grey), so decide how bright on black-to-white you want the subject to be and use Exposure Compensation to adjust Exposure so it naturally falls there in-camera because that will save you time in processing post-shoot. Read about Ansel Adams's Zone System for more on this. The principles still hold true.
