Concept generation is a creative and exploratory phase, where you use techniques such as brainstorming, sketching, prototyping, and testing to generate and evaluate multiple ideas. Concept generation allows you to explore different possibilities, challenge assumptions, and discover new opportunities. You should aim to generate a diverse range of concepts that address different aspects of your user needs, and select the most promising ones for further development.
Concept generation comes down to that initial onboard--that very first conversation with your partner (client) in the project. It is VITAL that you are listening closely--no one knows their business like they do. *Ask exploratory questions--take notes. listen, listen, listen. From there, your notes will translate into the pallet of colors, shapes, visuals. Your concept generation is a direct extension of your interpretations during that onboard. If you're not listening--that will translate. I've been at this for over 2 decades--that doesn't come from a text book, it comes from hundreds of projects in real world application. Following up from above "concept generation" When all of your visuals are polished (not sloppy) it is at that time that the presentation happens. Much of that can be eliminated if you have your partner (client) onboarded during the entire process, not to micromanage, but to make sure you are on point (it's a delicate walk; remembering that they hired you, you didn't hire them!) Here's where you listen again--but also to drip in your expertise as to the direction you've taken. Again, they hired you for a skillset that they do not possess. If they feel "heard" and "seen"--you will be absolutely amazed with how far, you'll go. Think "white glove concierge service" they'll love you for it.
Finally, you need to communicate your concept to your stakeholders, clients, and users. Concept communication is a persuasive and engaging phase, where you use tools such as storyboards, mockups, videos, and presentations to convey your vision and value proposition. Concept communication helps you share your insights, explain your decisions, and convince your audience of the feasibility and desirability of your concept. You should aim to communicate your concept in a clear, concise, and compelling way, and solicit feedback and support for your next steps.
From #2 and #3 above (-: And this comes from decades in the game. My application may be vastly different that yours--but results are results. We need to humble ourselves, drop being pretentious and get humble. Communication! is SO KEY! It's a dance back and forth with much give and take. They hired you--you bring "why you did what you did" to the table; then listen. They will ask a question--unpack it and reply back. It doesn't have to be complicated--It comes down to the human connection. From there, the meeting exits with steps to follow up on the campaign! It's exciting--it's magic!

I think it’s more important to remain connected to what’s happening at this specific moment, but also allow for that bit of individual flair and perspective that can help create something memorable.
To apply user needs and conceptual design trends to your own projects, it's essential to begin with user research. This allows you to understand your users and their needs. Additionally, be creative and flexible in your approach by using different techniques and tools to stimulate your creativity. It's also important to learn from others by studying their successes and failures for inspiration and guidance. Furthermore, it's necessary to test and validate your concepts with prototypes and tests, as well as involve your users and stakeholders in the process. Lastly, use effective communication and collaboration skills to share your concept, explain your rationale, and persuade your audience of its value.
We love to practice applied empathy and really make sure we think about things both from the users perspective, but also the clients. Working through a wide range of user journeys and perspectives, and combining these various view points into actionable steps for our design team allows us to fully integrate what our research tells us. We then ‘sort’ our concepts from mild to wild to make sure we get the deepest breadth of idea possible - which has the added benefit of reinforcing to our team that it’s ok to think outside the box, allowing for a culture where it’s ok to explore something that doesn’t eventually make it into the final concept.
Our user or customer, thanks to their actions when choosing products or services, is an endless source of information that gives us clues not only about tastes, trends, or purchasing patterns. These insights are crucial and must be interpreted in a design strategy that puts the user first. Only then can we develop truly successful designs.
Here's something else to consider, and I can't stress this enough. It is something I wished I had heard 2 decades ago--it would have saved me many headaches. We need to remember that aside from all of the above; we have a human connection bridge to build between ourselves and our partner (client). It's not 1 and done--it's playing the long game..its fostering that relationship well after the initial project. It's beautiful humility knowing we're not the only ones that can do what we do--SO, what makes YOU different--what makes YOU stand out--what makes YOU next level. This isn't a circus act, it's about getting real and focusing on the human connection. What we do as a collective is beautiful--it's not "just design" that extends off of us.
