The experiences that we are willing to donate our time to is a huge clue for individuals seeking social impact in their career path. You definitely want to “start with why” in any career exploration exercise (and yes, please reference the TED talk by Simon Sinek as it’s a great coaching resource for how to communicate everything!). When writing your resume, find a couple job descriptions that resonate with you. Use their language about required skills to drive the focus of presenting your skills on your resume.

2 Highlight your skills and achievements

One of the most important parts of your resume is the skills and achievements section, where you demonstrate your value and fit for the role. You need to highlight both your hard skills and your soft skills, as well as your accomplishments and results. Hard skills are the technical or specialized abilities that are relevant to the role, such as data analysis, project management, or fundraising. Soft skills are the interpersonal or transferable skills that are essential for working in social impact, such as communication, teamwork, or leadership. Resumes must focus on the skills that the employer is seeking. Use the language of the job description to formulate them! If the JD says “designing and developing XYZ” and you have that skill, your bullets start with “designed and developed XYZ (and elaborate your specific experiences, relevant techniques used to accomplish, metrics, impacts, achievements that describe prove your skill level)” A good pattern for bullets is: Active verb plus skill, and then experience, metrics, impact, achievements.

3 Showcase your values and passion

Another key element of your resume is the values and passion section, where you show your alignment and commitment to the mission and vision of the organization. You need to convey why you're passionate about the social or environmental issue that the organization is addressing, and how your values match their values. You can do this by including a personal statement or summary at the top of your resume, where you briefly explain your career goal, your motivation, and your fit for the role. One tip I like to recommend is to take the job description and line by line, mark your resume where the components they require are detailed in your document. If you are missing some thing, you can add it. If you have used different language, you can update the keywords, so they match. If you have too much, you can remove irrelevant pieces and ensure that they are tucked into your LinkedIn profile.
