Let me explain: A report is not necessarily a 'one size fits all' A report meant for the leadership needs to be business friendly, meaning, minimal or even better, no use of jargons. It needs to focus on the business related information. Ex: "Project is on track to go live by 15th of Feb as planned. Analytics of entry points are completed and dashboards are being completed with a slight delay of 3 days." This same update to the team or your Project manager could be more Jargon heavy and specific in terms of the information you're trying to convey about the how the project is on track, what milestones have been completed and what exactly is causing the delay.

I think all the above are required to consider while planning to write a report whatever it may be about. But when I decide I should write a report on a given theme and context, firstly, I should read relevant documents, listen to the concerned people, see the sites, feel the local situation, understand my limits/scopes and prepare a scratch draft. Try to revise it a couple of times by asking myself as if I am the target reader of this report. Then things start to change and improve towards better direction. Nothing may be perfect but I believe in my capacity to improve myself and re-orient towards the specific purposes. Repprt wrting is an Art itself.
