How can you work with a team member who resists new ideas?

First, inquire about their background and the thought process that led them to this point. Then, explore potential ideas that can be broken down into manageable steps for implementation. Encourage them to embrace small milestones as they work towards realizing the new idea. Once they witness their success with this initial concept, their resistance will fade away, paving the way for future endeavors

Lack of exposure to external environment and new technologies might be the main root cause for this issue. R&D members shall be aware and involved in many internal and external activities and trainings that enrich their knowledge and expand their horizons.

When a team member resists new ideas, it's important to identify the root cause before attempting to resolve the issue. Here are some potential reasons for resistance and my perspective on how to address them: 1. Lack of Conviction 2. Fear of Change 3. Feeling Excluded or Threatened 4. Communication Misunderstandings 5. Personality Differences

One way to have acceptance from all team members for any new idea is more and more involvement from all. If all is involved in the discussion then they will be able to understand the pros and cons of new idea and then on the basis of their understanding they can clarify all the thoughts which is creating hindrance of acceptance of idea

To effectively connect with team members, it's crucial to first understand their motivations. Ask open-ended questions to uncover what's holding them back - whether it's a lack of understanding, fear of change, or something else. When presenting a new idea, instead of just listing features, focus on the benefits for both the individual & the team. Use data & real-life examples to showcase how this idea can positively impact their work and their personal growth. Don't simply impose the idea on the team, but involve them in the brainstorming process. Large changes can be daunting, so Introduce the new ideas in a controlled manner to build trust & demonstrate success which can ease resistance and encourage. Celebrate even minor successes.

One thing I have found very useful is to use cases of success. If people ia reluctant to change lbut you prove to them that the change will be beneficial they then to change their mind. If had happen many times to me that people is questioning the new way of doing things until I show them that others did it this new way and they were able to achieve better results.

The next step is to communicate the benefits of the new ideas, both for the team and the customers. Explain how the ideas align with the team's goals, vision, and values, and how they can solve the customers' problems or needs. Use data, evidence, or examples to support your arguments, and show how the ideas can improve the quality, efficiency, or impact of the product. There are always multiple perspectives on the same topic. And each team member will see something important about it. Truly listening to where somebody is coming from and incorporating their concerns and perspective in the final idea is a great way to actually end up with a better outcome. Everything in product management is a team sport, and listening and effective co-creation is a key skill for any product leader. While at the same time holding a clear vision for direction. If there is disagreement about the fundamentals of direction that needs to be resolved. Constructive debate about how to get there is a sign of a healthy team.

In most cases people resist new things because they afraid and sometimes the unknown. Involving the resistant in the process they will familiarise themselves about the new product and reduce the mystique. However, not all people are willing to embrace changes, so you should also give other some space so they can learn near future.

The root cause of resistance to change must be hidden in some other experience, assumptions, presumptions,misunderstanding or even dissatisfaction of the resisting member on some other issue. An open communication and critical analysis may indicate the possible cause of the resistance. If the leader works on the same probably the resistance would melt. If the resisting member had suggested something earlier which was rejected he can develop the resistance attitude. A thorough discussion would be a good solution.

I think opportunity should be given to understand and accept new ideas. However, resistance beyond a level signals that the member should not be on your team - perhaps there are other opportunities/operations in the company more suitable to the individual.

One of the most common reason individuals become overly resistant is that they are in environments where ideation and direction is 'pushed' on the teams versus being 'pulled' from them. If you are a leader and are not sure if you are a push or pull leader, there's an easy test. Even when presenting, do you speak more than 50% of the time? If you do, good chances that you are a push leader. How do you change that!? Talk less and listen more! For years I was a push leader. When I started to listen more, my own performance and my teams performance really flourished.
