It can be said that we are product of our environment. There’s so much that comes with our experiences, both good and challenging, that can tap into and enhance our creative processes. Growing up in an underserved community in the Bronx, often had me working to help my family make ends meet, while these challenges were present it allowed me to become as creative as ever in finding solutions and working on projects, which translated over to my current career. The grind lifestyle is not glamorous but there can be light in the tough times. Inspiration for creativity can also be found all around you. Your city or town, the people in it, or the events, etc and so much more can ignite your next best idea, concept, project.

With nearly 18 years of experience spanning sectors from Telecom to Oilfield, I’ve gleaned crucial insights that have shaped my career pathways. The cornerstone of professional growth, I’ve found, lies in continuous learning and adaptability. Despite I’m holding a Bsc. degree in electrical engineering, I’ve ventured into various industries, embodying the concept of relearning. My journey has not only fortified my soft skills but also enriched my global exposure, having undertaken assignments in numerous locations worldwide with multicultural teams. Consider the values or principles that resonate deeply with you and the goals or dreams that drive your aspirations.

All experiences are unique. It is how you approach people, problems, and technology based on those unique experiences that show who you are as a professional.

A simple rule of thumb that I use: What is something you do that you enjoy doing or can do with relative ease - that others struggle to do or find painful to do? Figure this out and the through process that goes into how you do it, in itself, becomes valuable.

In my experience, you can do this by integrating them strategically in various aspects of your personal and professional life. In professional settings, articulate how your distinct viewpoint adds value to projects, problem-solving, or innovation. Share anecdotes that showcase how your unique background has contributed to successful outcomes.

You could leverage your money, intelligence, insights, luck, location, education, expertise and status. For example: If you have F* you money, then take small risks that won't destroy if you if things go south, but will pay out disproportionately if things work. If you have expertise and insights into a particular demographic or industry leverage it to educate others about it or to create a solution that fixes a problem 10X better than anyone else could.

Every experience opens doors to new opportunities. Identify the one that fits your professional / personal objectives, and patiently nurture it with a definitive action plan around it. Know that it will not fructify overnight. For example, a crisis can help identify high potential team members far better / faster than a steady state situation. Analyse how they handled the situation and improve weak areas over time to realize their full potential.

The single best advice/perspective I can give from my experience is to travel, if possible, to immerse yourself in different environments and cultures. This firsthand experience can offer unique insights and foster a deeper understanding of the world. Additionally, consider taking on projects that require collaboration with individuals with varied expertise and backgrounds.

The books "The unfair advantage" gives a brilliant framework for this. These come in the form of - Money (Safety net, wealth) - Intelligence (Social, emotional, street smarts) and Insights (Industrial, social) - Luck and Location (Where and when) - Education and Expertise - Status (Social, Cultural and Capital) Find out where you may have an unfair advantage - work on leveraging it. Work on those other aspects that might be an easy kill. If you have money, find a way to build status. If you lack in education credentials, fill that gap.

Maintain a level of self-awareness to ensure that your perspective doesn't overshadow the contributions of others. Actively listen to diverse opinions and be open to learning from them. Seek out feedback to understand how your unique experiences can complement and enhance the collective understanding within a team or community.

Or perhaps you're at the office, noticing your paper expenses skyrocket. Rather than sticking with the status quo, you decide to go entirely paperless, revolutionizing your workspace. Now, envision yourself on a cruise, discovering that you've misplaced your bag and, with it, your money. Rather than seeking immediate help, you choose the unconventional route, diving into a quick gig to replenish your funds. That's the way to do it!

The adage "You miss all the shots you don't take", hold true. The key to leverage your skills, find success and be lucky is to produce - a lot. Take shots, don't hassle about the immediate outcome. Additionally, having the mindset of being a life-long learner helps you become infinitely more potent.
