A good reputation can also innoculate you if - and some would say when - bad things happen. No one wants to think about the rogue employee or the random hacker, but bad stuff can happen to good nonprofits, despite background checks and information security policies. The more you tell your story, the more you prove you are what you say you are through content that illustrates the good work you do, the better position you are in to mitigate negative stories and any donors with bad feelings should something go wrong. Effectively, they've had years of hearing the good and one bad thing isn't going to corrupt the perception they have of the organization as a whole. They give you the benefit of the doubt.

Credibility goes hand in hand with consequence. Try to be an expert in something. Don't try to communicate too many things at once even if you work with many sector. E.g. a European project office probably works with many different issues and types of funds, but its expertise is based on its knowledge in the preparation of applications. Don't let the stakeholder try to understand what your institution does. Choose your clearest strength and build your communication around it.

John Donne wrote in a poem, "no man is an island", today we certainly say the same thing about companies, organizations, and governments. Since we are not alone, stakeholders will constantly measure and compare us in a fluid scorecard. If your organization has a well-established fundraising network, it is due to the branding of the org, what the leadership portrays and current policies it applies. this fundraising network is publicly announcing who you are and what you stand for. It is a virtuous cycle. In the global stage, we must consider yesterday’s deadly attack on our forces not just with a heavy heart but remember that our allies & enemies will grade us and accordingly will decide whether to bank on us or attack us more frequently.

If you want to acquire new donors to expand your network, make it person to person. Meet with people face to face. Show them you value them enough to spend time with them. The only way to build strong relationships is person to person.
