How can you use Unity and Unreal Engine to streamline game development?

From a recruiters point of view I get to talk to some of the brightest minds in game development! One question I used to ask all the time was, "Why do some developer teams decide on Unreal or Unity as their choice of engine?" The choice between Unreal and Unity often depends on the specific requirements of your project. Some of it just comes down to what you and your team are more comfortable or proficient in. I think in general an advantage here is the ability to build and test in-the-scene with the editors allow you to iterate through concepts at a quicker pace. Use this type of feature to your advantage. Build your idea, test it yourself, iterate, have others test, iterate some more, and so on until you are happy enough to progress out of your circle for outside feedback. This will allow you to find and cut issues out earlier and ultimately find the fun in your concept faster.

A good tutorial never fails. Whether it's a blog post, class, or a Youtube video, a good resource is a helpful resource. I've always thought Unity and Unreal Engine had really great documentation and tutorials to get started, then you can move on to more specific tutorials through Youtube.

The best way to find the fun is to fail quickly and fail often. Finding what doesn't work helps to find the fun. Unity and Unreal are great for prototyping quickly. It's easy to get lost in a theoretical design sometimes, that's why it is key to experiment and see what works in practical application. Don't be afraid to fail, it will help build the desired mechanic the best way.
