To communicate in an effective way about our sustainability values, goals and achievements, we should tap into the power of storytelling. Make it specific, with a hero or heroine, and share their journey. Whether it's a success story or a challenge, framing it as a story will help people remember it.

Sustainability storytelling can captivate potential employees by showcasing a company's commitment to environmental and social responsibility. By narrating impactful stories of how the organization is making a difference, whether through eco-friendly initiatives, community engagement, or ethical practices, companies can appeal to the values-driven aspirations of talent. Sustainability storytelling is telling the WHOLE story of your sustainability journey. This means communicating your why, how, and what - and also your wins and fails. It's not a perfect journey ever - so not just highlighting the successes. This also will help you avoid greenwashing - which increasingly has higher consequences.

First, make sure you are communicating on actions you have actually implemented. You must also have gathered some metrics that show there have been positive outcomes. Otherwise, you would be greenwashing. Never lose sight of the fact that storytelling is a means, not an end. Include the stories of specific employees and external stakeholders and include quotes when possible. Ensure you communicate your stories through the appropriate channels (e.g. non-financial reporting, your website, etc.) and design the message so it is visually atractive. Make sure your employees remember the message not only when they briefly read a story, but also when they are performing everyday tasks. This is how they'll stay motivated.

What counts more, especially for the younger generation, is that the values of the company you pick are in line with your own values. Because if people feel they have to leave their values behind when going through the (virtual or actual) office door, that will lead to disengagement or at least less motivation. Conversely, if your audience is younger people who would be entering your workforce at entry-level positions, social media will be their primary source of information on the company. Other ways to get your story out are trade magazines and special interest video programs or presentations. I find that the world is hungry for sustainability stories, especially good ones. Crafting a good story starts with running a good sustainability program.
