Polls can be a useful tool, especially when we’re meeting online and not around post-it laden flip charts. The trick is to make sure everyone is taking part and that there aren’t too many polls. I find that saturating a presentation or workshop with polls can detract from the main work of the meeting. Be sure to stick to your timings too, it’s very easy to become distracted by interesting poll results. Make sure you’re 100% sure of the tech and have a back up presenter to switch to if your IT has a moment!

This tool can be very effective to garner support as you make organization-wide policy changes while creating the data to support the decisions in a multi-layered approval process. Well crafted surveys (see above) can solicit input from across large groups of stakeholders giving them the opportunity to express their views and concerns. Their inputs are necessary to develop or update existing policies that have grown outdated. As all of the inputs come together and go through the approval process, the policy or directive will change. Compromise to get consensus and support is necessary. Not everyone will be happy with the outcome. However, as you have given all stakeholders an opportunity for input, you gave them a say in the result.
