What does your audience value? If you can genuinely answer this question then you're on the right track. You need to know what makes them tick and what is important to them.

I like to look at storytelling as developing a narrative around reality. The authentic story must stay that way so it connects and offers something meaningful to the reader/viewer/visitor. But I agree that there is an element of craft that must be considered. Create interest, use humor, tease out a surprise. Most important, develop a real connection that earns trust with the audience. And hope that you made it sticky enough that it elicits comments and shares...

In modern marketing, I would think of it more as an improvisation. You might have an idea of the beginning, middle and end (arc), but what happens along the way should be discovered through interaction with your audience.

You should consider whether you are even in the right place to tell the story. Is it your story to tell? Do you have the right to speak? If you have been actively involved in this subject you might have the right to contribute but if you haven’t, it’s not just inauthentic but can land you in hot water. Sometimes knowing when to speak is more important than what you have to say.
