How can you use storytelling to bring your character and environment modeling work to life?

A story only moves if the character wants something, that is a general rule for any format of storytelling. The character is the living expression of your narrative, it has a past, a present and probably a future - if you know this, the rest will follow.

One of the ways is to not use AI, even if it has been trained by asking people from LinkedIn to contribute answers to these 'expert panels'.

In my opinion, crafting relatable characters involves weaving everyday experiences into their stories, creating a tapestry of familiarity that invites the audience to see a reflection of their own lives in the characters' journeys. By subtly embedding simple and ordinary elements, we allow people to connect on a personal level, turning the mundane into a shared experience that resonates deeply.

By incorporating storytelling techniques into your character and environment modeling work, you can elevate your creations beyond mere visual representations and bring them to life in the minds of your audience.

Sketching is key as it lays the foundation for the animation ahead. Add a sparkle to the sketch and expect a spark in the animation. Being creative and imaginative is required to produce an appealing, attractive and impactful animated clip. For this, the mind needs to go into wild gear... focusing on the overall objective and using this to place on paper keywords and objects that the audience will associate with. Next link these individual parts into a sequence and start to draft out the storyboard. If this sounds challenging... it's not. Simply enjoy, and play out the animation in your head onto paper and then digitise using a relevant software development environment.

As you sketch, let your imagination run wild, drawing inspiration from the world around you and the stories you hold dear. Perhaps you incorporate landscapes reminiscent of your favorite childhood memories or architectural details from your travels. By infusing your sketches with personal experiences, you breathe life into your scenes, making them feel like snapshots from your own journey.

once you understand the story, we can start to sketch the visuals on our head first.. jot it down in a note, make a messy one or structured one, how its gonna be looking, how its gonna be colored, how the salt girl will have such a sassy attitude or manly one, anything that will be in your frame of animation, or out of frame that would help make the context into clear surface. make it into a writing and a storyboard.

Putting your story on white paper is a task that can be difficult. In my experience, thinking about my story takes me to places I have lived, heard or seen. So before you turn to the blank page, check out all those places with visual references and start shaping your world.

As you dive into character modeling, channel the essence of real people you've encountered along your path. Draw from the quirks, nuances, and idiosyncrasies that make each individual unique. Infuse your character with traits reminiscent of friends, family, or even aspects of yourself. By drawing upon personal experiences, you create characters that feel rich, multidimensional, and utterly human, inviting viewers to connect with them on a deeper level.

The design of a character can tell a story by itself. Do they yearn to break free of the world they are part of? Make them stand out; use shapes, colours and textures that differ from the rest of the environment. Does the animation follow them on a journey of their own development? Consider transforming their design along the way to tell this visually.

The look and feel of your character is initially driven by the overall style that the animation will have. However, some choices in modelling your character can have impact on what they will feel like when they move, speak or dance on a rooftop at midnight. I think that it story is again a driving factor here - think of all the great animation classics that we know from our childhood. What elements of some of the most beloved characters come to your mind? What made them stand out? And yes, color theory, how shapes work together and what textures you use will be important - but it's not fundamental to the initial development of a character look. Think about story and likeability (or lack thereof) first - and then about technicalities.

Don’t hesitate to exaggerate your characters’ traits in order to make their personality more obvious to the viewer. Unless, of course, you don’t want your audience to find out about your characters motivation until later in the story.

after we define our story, and sketch it, we can start to make it into clarity of the characters, wether you can make them so relateable and so close to your real experience, or make them so detachable from your real experience, that even in the end in the final product you will be surprised that you found some people that will relate to that characters that is you "think" detached from the reality.. and after you imagine that characters how you wanna be , now we have to make the visuals so that people would understand and sees your imaginations, how the salt girl looks, how the husband who cheat with salt girls looks, how the wife who knows her husband is cheating with her through only one clue which is salt, will looks.

Transport yourself back to memorable locations from your past as you model your environment. Whether it's the cozy nook of your favorite coffee shop or the sprawling vistas of a cherished hiking trail, draw upon places that hold personal significance. Infuse your environment with details that evoke nostalgia, warmth, or wonder, creating a setting that feels like a familiar embrace to both you and your audience.

after you models the characters , you can put design the environment where your characters gonna live, and stand, and react there. how the environment gonna help with how difficult or easy the conflict of the stories gonna be resolved. like in the kitchen where the salt is gone, what is the light in there, how is the light and the floor, what part is gonna be where the wife starts the detective works on finding that his husband is cheating through salt.

From my own journey in character and environment modeling, there's a technique I fondly call "Craket" inspired by the distinctive snap sound clapperboard. It's all about playing with timing to breathe life into your scenes. Timing, or "Craket" becomes your most powerful tool in storytelling. When you master it, you can make any scene convey the exact emotion or action you intend. For rapid scenes, I adhere to what I dub the '3-second rule'—it's quick, effective, and keeps viewers engaged. For slower, more deliberate moments, I lean into making the in-between frames really work for their keep. By manipulating perspectives and timing, you can slow down the pace without losing the audience's interest.

then after we do everything before, like sketch the characters, model the characters and the environment. now we told them to move to make the stories start, we animate it with a tool, software, a traditional way, or any medium that we can. this part right here will affect the audience, wether they will be moved through the stories, and believed the wife that caught his husband cheating red handed, or the audience will simply mock and insult your animation style and how stiff you animated it. its up to you.. so make it good, make it into your passions to move your puppet into life, and become so believeable and move your audience emotions, basically you are not only gonna move your characters, but you also gonna move the audience hearts

Reviewing your story is key so that everyone knows what you wanted to convey and that the message is not just for you. Review your work again and again, ask your colleagues to look at it to give another perspective to your work and so that your message reaches the world in the most genuine way.

The process is a circle where you keep assessing, and going back to previous steps. I like to make sure my voice/goal/client brief hasn't been diluted by the sometimes numerous choices and changes that have been made. Revising with honesty doesn't mean being too critical, but making sure you haven't strayed away, losing something in the process.

I think that the "bigger picture" is important when bringing characters and scenes together and unfolding a story. The great examples in the animation realm have proven that only if all elements involved work together in harmony, synchronized, almost like a symbiotic ecosystem, it will create something truly magical, that will have a longer-lasting impact on the audience. Each of your characters has its own story, voice, feelings and ideas - it will shape how they respond to their surroundings. Each scenery will define how they are merged with the world you have envisioned for them. Each of these elements will be a building block for your higher story - your bigger picture.

Place your character(s) in pressure situations in which they have to make life-changing decisions.That'll move your story forward.
