How can you use staff development to improve employee engagement?

This, in turn, promotes employee engagement as individuals feel more comfortable collaborating, sharing ideas, and taking ownership of their work in a safe and inclusive setting.

Often, nonprofits need more budget and staff to implement an employee engagement program. Such initiatives tend to be at the bottom of the list of things to do. However, investing time and resources helps with employee retention and promotes an environment of belonging. Though it may require time and funding in the front end, it will ultimately save the organization money by not having to hire and onboard new staff by maintaining high staff retention.

Using the Herzberg model, we can tailor-make the approach depending on the need identified. For example, if it is a Maintenance factor, we may use peer relations or focus on working conditions. If we are targeting a Motivator factor, we may focus on employee recognition or career advancement. We can uncover the key areas (Maintenance or Motivator factors) to focus on through using employee surveys, interviews or even discussion groups.

Making staff development a priority is like giving a boost to everyone's happiness at work. We can do this by helping our team learn new skills in easy ways, showing them the different paths they can take in their careers, and regularly telling them how they're doing. We should also appreciate their hard work with recognition and offer choices in how they learn best. When we care about our team's personal growth and well-being, they feel happier and more engaged in their jobs, creating a positive cycle of success for everyone.

Programs that Support Employee Well-being can be particularly helpful: Offer resources and initiatives that support employee well-being, such as mental health programs, wellness activities, or employee assistance programs. Demonstrate a genuine concern for employees' overall well-being, fostering a positive work environment.

One key strategy to employ is to adopt a learning road map that is linked to a career progression map. By doing this, we can help an employee understand the learning they need to achieve (for example supervisory skills to management skills) in order to progress further in their career (for example from a supervisor to a manager). A typical learning road map will list down the different courses and learning opportunities available, categorized into different levels in the hierarchy and organizational levels. This will help an employee to identify the learning map they want to take and have a meaningful discussion with their supervisor and create a focused development plan.

One very powerful strategy to focus on is give an employees a sense of purpose in what they are doing at work. This is very motivating and gives them meaning in their work. For example, the company can organize a corporate day of service where employees work in teams to serve and give back to the community through projects like refurbishing a local school, cleaning up the beach or even painting public areas. Another way to encourage employees is to provide additional leave days for them to apply for when they do volunteer work for those in need.

One simple but effective way to encourage employee development is for the supervisor to send personal encouragement and recognition to an employee who has completed successfully a training course or learning activity. This can take place over a simple coffee catch-up session or even lunch. Leaders should give their team member an opportunity to share what they have learnt and how they plan to put what they have learnt into practice. In many instances, a training course will give employees ideas on how to improve the workplace or organization and opportunities must be provided for them to make suggestions or share ideas in an informal or formal setting.

We start by setting clear expectations for individual growth and development, aligning them with our organization's goals. I emphasize the importance of regular feedback and open communication, ensuring that team members have a voice in their own development plans. As a leader we recognize and celebrate achievements, both big and small, which further motivates and reinforces the culture of learning and collaboration.

When team members achieve their goals or reach significant milestones, we should openly acknowledge and reward their accomplishments, whether through public recognition, promotions, or special incentives. In my experience I find that inclusion and diversity are very important in work culture and staff development, where everyone has a place and respect for their abilities. This diversity helps to further achieve goals and increase results.

This just goes back to every project you work on the stakeholders are the most important piece. For this one, the employees are the stakeholder and getting their input is crucial. You want that information gathering to occur from the beginning with multiple feedback loops throughout the process. It also should be evaluated after the staff development is completed for a particular time period.

Staff development doesn't necessarily need to cost a lot. There are creative ways to engage and encourage staff development. For example, at our all-staff meeting, we took turns leading the meeting. This simple act allowed staff to build confidence in teaching, creating agendas, and facilitating in front of their peers, regardless of their role in the organization.
