How can you use speech writing to inspire and motivate your team?

The ability to inspire and motivate a team is essential for any leader. Speechwriting is a powerful tool in this regard, capable of creating emotional connections, conveying clear visions and energizing team members to achieve their common goals.

Here are some key points to consider discussing with your team to effectively motivate them: Empowerment and Trust: Empower your team by trusting them to take ownership of their work and make decisions autonomously. Show confidence in their abilities and encourage them to take initiative and innovate. Vision and Direction: Paint a clear vision of where the team is headed and the desired outcomes. Provide guidance on the steps needed to achieve success and inspire confidence in their abilities to reach the goals. Individual Contribution: Recognize and appreciate the individual contributions of team members. Highlight specific achievements and successes, no matter how small, to show that their efforts are valued and make a difference

Speak from the heart and show genuine passion for our team's mission. 6. Keep it simple and easy to understand so everyone is on the same page. 7. Words have shades of meaning that evoke different emotions and reactions. Read an online dictionary of synonyms and you'll see what I mean. For example, "concise" means speaking or writing briefly. The synonym "succinct" means compressing into the smallest possible space. Another synonym "pithy" means not only succinct but full of substance and meaning and therefore especially forcible or telling." (Definitions are thanks to my dog-eared copy of Webster's New Dictionary of Synonyms.) Pick up a copy of "The Elements of Style" and re-read the part about "making every word tell." Write your speech similar to the way you speak. Then go through and eliminate every unnecessary word. Replace multi-syllable words with single-syllable words.

Practice your speech while you record it on your phone. You can do two things with the video. First, evaluate the video. How is your tone and pacing? How many filler works, such as "um" and "like" do you need to eliminate? How is your energy and movement on stage? If you record your video using MS Teams, you can turn on the Speaker Coach feature that will evaluate your talk on several dimensions. Second, use the video to help you memorize your speech. Listen to it while you're driving or exercising. Listen to it right before you go to sleep. The more you know your speech, the easier it will be to deliver.

End with a Call to Action: Conclude your speech with a clear and inspiring call to action. Challenge your team to commit to the objectives you have set and to work together to achieve them. Convey confidence in the team's ability to achieve great things and inspire them to act with determination and enthusiasm. Focus on Progress and Overcoming Challenges: Encourage a growth mindset by highlighting the progress made and the team's ability to overcome challenges. Emphasize the importance of resilience and determination in the face of adversity, inspiring them to keep moving forward, even in the face of difficulties.

Think improv when it comes to speaking. Whatever happens, you can accept it and immediately pivot. Slides don't display on screen? Give your talk without them. Program running long and your speaking time gets cut in half? Deliver just your key points in less time, rather than speaking at warp speed to fit it all in. Audience seem checked out while you talk? Ask them an engaging question. Make an unexpected statement. Another way of adapting to the situation is to think through what could go wrong in advance. I used to do executive communications for a number of CEOs. I had their script in a folder for them, along with a few backup copies for me and the file on a thumb drive. Slides were sent in advance, and also on two different drives.

Elevate your colleagues by celebrating their achievements. Highlight instances where they have exceeded expectations to deliver exceptional customer service or supported a teammate in achieving that goal. Additionally, articulate a forward-looking vision that inspires and motivates, setting a path for continued excellence.
