SMED can be implemented by having a manufacturing manager with leadership qualities focusing on the improvement culture through kaizen motivating the employees. I suggested SMED in gear cutting in the machine shop at Bhilai Steel Plant where I was working. Setting for gear cutting for a particular type used to take 3-4hrs . The operator would have loaded the job ,the shift will end. The next shift operator will disturb the Setting and set the machine as per his requirement. By this the fulfillment of no of gears was very low and higher mgt was annoyed. I took a stance and told both the shift managers that the gear Setting should not be disturbed and both operators will continue till the job is completed irrespective of which shifts job.This resulted in tremendous improvement of no of gears manufactured. I explained to the managers and operators that this was SMED.
