Simulation technology can replicate the equipment, procedures, and conditions of well control operations, such as drilling, tripping, circulating, and killing the well. It can also simulate different types of well control problems, such as kicks, losses, gas migration, and blowouts, and allow the trainees to apply the appropriate methods and techniques to resolve them. By practicing in a simulated environment, the trainees can gain a deeper understanding of the well control principles and concepts, and develop the confidence and competence to handle real-life situations.

2 Increasing engagement

Simulation technology can increase the engagement of well control safety training by creating a realistic and interactive virtual environment that can challenge and motivate the trainees. Simulation technology can incorporate various elements that can enhance the realism and interactivity of the training, such as sound, graphics, animations, scenarios, feedback, and communication. For example, simulation technology can generate realistic sounds and visuals that can mimic the noises and pressures of the drilling rig, the fluid flow and behavior in the wellbore, and the effects and consequences of well control incidents. 3 Reducing costs

Simulation technology can reduce the costs of well control safety training by eliminating or minimizing the need for physical resources, such as equipment, materials, and facilities. Simulation technology can provide a virtual representation of the drilling rig and the wellbore, which can reduce the wear and tear, maintenance, and transportation costs of the real equipment. It can also save the costs of consumables, such as fuel, water, and mud, that are used in the drilling and well control operations. Moreover, simulation technology can reduce the costs of travel, accommodation, and logistics for the trainees and the instructors, as they can access the training from anywhere with an internet connection.

On our drillships; we deployed a “drillers chair” simulator where we can put our team members through various scenarios - from the basics to the most advanced. This not only allows us to challenge our crews on well control scenarios, but also allows junior members key “time in seat” which they may struggle to gain in the real world. These also work completely offline, so no internet connection required.

Simulation technology can enable feedback for well control safety training by recording and analyzing the performance and behavior of the trainees in the simulated environment.
