safety leadership involves setting clear and realistic safety goals and expectations, providing feedback and recognition, modeling safe behaviors and attitudes, empowering and engaging workers and fostering a learning and improvement environment.

Safety culture means that every single employee is aware of his responsibilities and knowledege of the risks and rules. Every single people has a role to play from the bottom to the top, exemplarity, awarness, communication and permanent training are the keys pillars of the safety culture, driven by a full committed leadership.

Within a business it starts from the top down. If management and leadership show care and attention to site safety, that is easily trickled down the chain of command.

In the construction projects safety has a crucial role for and in success of the project. No. of safe manhours w.r.t progress in any project shows the the actual success rate of that project and to attain that safe manhours, every stakeholder is responsible in the project. When you think individually for safety then you are automatically improving safety culture at project.

Several times throughout my career I’ve started a new position at a company that does not have a safety topic moment to start a meeting. On occasion the idea was completely foreign to everyone in my group. I suggested that we start having a safety topic to start each meeting and for the most part the idea caught on. If workers go through life not looking out for themselves or others they are more susceptible to accidents. By suggesting and leading by example the safety culture in the office and in the field evolved for the better into a mindset of let’s all get home tonight in the same condition we left this morning. Zero accidents.

It's a continuous improvement process , nothing has to be considered as permanently acquired, that would be a big mistake. the common factor of incident remains the human factor. that means that besides the rules, the procedures, there will be always a residual risk . that's why we can not , never, let our guard down.

Safety leadership is a combined effort. One safety person, or two, or three, won’t influence overall culture unless everyone becomes a “safety leader”. It’s a way of life, that’s what culture is. For a safety professional to be a safety leader, they've got to dive into the trenches, chat with the folks swinging the hammers, and make safety a team thing. You can talk AT people all you want, it won’t change a thing. To be a safety leader you have to lead from the middle.
