How can you use root cause analysis to solve problems in leadership roles?

Think of root cause analysis in leadership like being a detective. First, figure out the main problem, like team conflicts or poor performance. Then, ask "Why?" a bunch of times to uncover the real reasons behind it. Look at data and talk to your team to get the full picture. Once you find the key reasons, make a plan to fix them, using your leadership skills to get things done. Keep an eye on the results, be ready to adjust your plan if needed, and learn from the whole process. It's like solving a puzzle to make things better for your team.

There are several methods to find Root Cause, each with it's own strength and drawbacks. Eg: 5 Whys, Fish Bone Diagram, Pareto Analysis, Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FEMA), Scatter Plot (To Analyze relation ship between variables), Fault tree Analysis, etc

Root cause is the specific factor that is causing the issue or success and not one of the many compounding secondary effects.

You'll only cure the symptoms if you don't tackle the root cause. It'll be a temporary fix but nothing sustainable! ?? Identify Underlying Issues ?Use RCA to delve into the root causes of problems, rather than just addressing symptoms. ?This involves asking "why" multiple times to uncover the fundamental issues ?? Implement Targeted Solutions ?Once the root causes are identified, leaders can develop and implement solutions that address these core issues, preventing recurrence and driving sustainable change PS. Leveraging root cause analysis in leadership is like performing surgery – it requires precision, a deep understanding of the underlying issues, and the ability to implement targeted solutions to ensure lasting success.

I like to use a four step process to get ring to tue root cause. 1- develop an hypothesis 2- test the hypothesis 3- measure for success 4- modify and repeat again Carry this out on every specific variable until the root cause is appropriately identified. .

I think the first step in the above of “defining the problem” is usually the one that people rush over. We don’t like to talk about pain or the challenges, we want to talk about solutions. The challenge with jumping to the solution too fast is that we will more than likely be wrong only because we do not truly understand the problem. Using the 5 why’s is good, or you can also continue to ask yourself, “so what” and how important the actual problem is to solve.

This analysis is vitally important. A leader is faced with many priorities and opinions are abound. Thais work eliminates opinions becoming facts and leading to poor outcomes. .

Effective leadership in Product and Engineering, especially in operations-focused roles, hinges on the transformative power of Root Cause Analysis (RCA). RCA is fundamental, not just for identifying core issues through things like the ‘5 Whys’, but also for eliciting deeper organizational insights, including cultural aspects, skillset gaps, and operational constraints & core technology limitations.

Giving your team the space to disagree and really focus on finding the root cause is key. If people cannot be honest and hold each other accountable; you will never get to the root of the problem.

Surround yourself with people who are not afraid to give an alternative point of view. Having the devils advocate that can bring another perspective is crucial to your own skills because you are pushing for the best answer possible, even if it doesn’t come from you

Root cause analysis is one tool. Research, experiences, learnings from others in your industry and outside your industry are also great tools.

All Leaders don't necessarily have to live by the same rules. Each come with different experiences and mindset as such multiple styles are possible. Using same leadership style at 2 different times amazingly could yield 2 different results. This leads me to my point RCA, whilst generally acclaimed to be awesome could also be tuned to the reasoning of the incumbent leadership. As a way to discredit previous management approach, RCA will simply close out that past approaches were off the grid, and that gives blessing to current leadership to proceed with their style. Rather than just do this, we need to ask 1. "what is needed now, to get xyz results?" 2. What is going to slow or impede this plan? 3. What can be done. 4. Let's just do!!

Leaders need a great deal of problem solving skills There are different RCA tools that may help you to brainstorm into the workstream. To delve into the problems and raise the right questions, it is important you need to deep dive. Get yourself familiar with metrics and data to gain insights. Be the face , get surrounded by mentors to have sound understanding for building reports for Top management. Seek knowledge and seek guidance on the topics to get to the core problem. Build on your strengths and raise the stakes on weaker links.
