In my experience , role playing is very helpful only when there is orientation about the community where the volunteering is intended and reflection at the end of the same. Else, it ends up being a fun activity and sometimes out of context . Role playing can be used specially to help volunteer managers recruit new volunteers . Creating an end to end role playing activity requires identifying 1. The starting point for the volunteer in terms of understanding and motivation 2. Desire to give of oneself fully to the activity 3. Immerse in the experience 4. Journal all responses- emotional, intellectual, physical.. 5. Reflect on each aspect of the experience from the get go 6. Identify how these reflections will impact action ( in the case volunteering )

3 How to prepare volunteers for role-playing?

Before starting the role-playing, you need to prepare the volunteers by explaining the purpose and benefits of role-playing, clarifying the learning objectives and expectations, providing the background information and instructions for the scenarios and roles, establishing rules and norms for the role-playing, building rapport and trust among the volunteers and facilitators, and encouraging participation and creativity. This will ensure that everyone is adequately prepared to engage in the role-playing activity with confidence.

Preparation is important - however within measures. The reason is to get to as authentic a scenario as possible . If there is too much preparation, the tendency for the experience to become artificial is higher

Open ended is useful but often volunteers are able to sharper in their responses if a rating mechanism or a closed set of responses to pick from are used. Its helpful to additionally have open ended questions. Closed ended responses offer easier solutions for designing post role playing interventions
