How can you use questions to encourage discussion?

Using questions is an effective technique for stimulating engagement and deepening understanding. Start with open-ended questions that makes participants to think critically and share their perspectives. Phrase questions to explore the "how" and "why" behind opinions and decisions, which encourages deeper analysis. Use follow-up questions to delve further into initial responses, showing genuine interest in the participants' thoughts while guiding them to consider other angles or implications. Questions that connect the discussion topic to participants' personal experiences enhances relevance and engagement. Using questions strategically creates a dynamic dialogue that enriches the group's learning experience.

You don't have to talk off the cuff. Likely on any topic, you have preliminary questions you want answered. Maybe someone else will have the same questions.

After you have planned what questions to ask and worked them in your presentation and session flow, you also need to "time" them. Questions asked at the beginning of the session will help you gauge the level of knowledge the participants have about the subject, while during the session it will assist them in focussing on the key points covered, and at the end it will help them bring it all together. Questions are most effective when they are timed well and asked not to show off your superiority but to draw the answers and knowledge from the participants.

Consider the timing of your inquiries and approach them with a strategic mindset. Avoid overwhelming individuals right from the start. Instead, utilise inquiries to steer the discussion or explore further into intriguing topics brought up by others. Embracing silence can also be a powerful tool. After asking a question, taking a moment of silence allows individuals?to gather their thoughts and encourages a deeper and more meaningful conversation.

Praise and encouragement is important. Even something small like "That's a great question" or "Absolutely, and..." are great ways to quickly acknowledge the learner and build rapport at the same time. Be careful how you respond to wrong answers, though. Instead of doing the opposite ("No, that's not right...") consider how you can reframe your response. "I like where you're going with that, but here's another angle..." "Not quite, but you're thinking in the right direction..."

Here are some simple tips to ask good questions in a training session: 1. Ask learners about their experiences about the topic: when individuals start reflecting on their experiences, it helps them resonate with the training better. 2. Ask them about a potential situation that they might have to deal with: this enables them to try and connect learning to the practical application when they come across a certain situation 3. Encourage them to answer questions arising from other people in the room: this again enables them to put on their thinking hats and also facilitates organic engagement within the group

Your delivery is important. Approach questions with sincere curiosity and a willingness to learn. Maintain?eye contact and have a friendly demeanour to create an environment where individuals feel at ease expressing their thoughts. Pay close attention to the responses and ask additional questions to explore the topic further. This dynamic exchange maintains the flow of conversation and fosters active participation from others.

Thought-Provoking Questions Stimulate critical thinking: Pose questions that require participants to analyze, evaluate, or synthesize information. Example: "What are the potential risks and benefits of implementing this new process?"

While working in the questions ensure that you are asking them in the right manner, at the time, and to the right participants. 1. Make sure your tone of voice is calm and reflects the questioning nature, do not sound sarcastic or rude or "know-it-all". 2. Ask the questions to move the session forward and start with questions that are simple to answer and then work your way up to more complex ones. 3. Don't ask questions to just one or a bunch of participants but ensure you ask questions all across the room. 4. Allow for thinking time, generally upto 30 seconds for the participant to answer.

Icebreakers are a great way to kick off training both in person and in virtual. Helps participants learn about each other and builds a wonderful level of comfort. I encourage the trainers I work with to have a list of icebreakers they can use.

In my experience the best and most versatile phrase which will help you gather lots of information from your communication partner is: HOW EXACTLY: ... would you do that? ... do you mean that? ... do you feel? e.g. How exactly will you make sure to remember this phrase, so you can use it in your next training?

Reflective Questions Encourage self-assessment: Ask questions that prompt participants to reflect on their own experiences and learning. Example: "How does this information relate to your own work experiences?
