How can you use project planning metrics to identify dependencies?

Dependencies are relationships between tasks or activities in a project where one task relies on the completion or input from another task, meaning the two tasks are interrelated or dependent on each other to progress.

In layman's terms, dependencies are all metrics identified that could contribute to an increased risk or budget to the project planning.

Identify dependencies by reviewing project tasks, their prerequisites, and the order in which they need to be completed. Consult with team members, use project management software, and create dependency charts to visualize relationships.

Work breakdown structure is by far the best tool for me to identify dependencies. But my team has one more approach - we answer this set of questions to make sure we haven't skipped anything: What external systems or APIs does this software interact with? Are there specific software requirements for the system to function? Which modules or components does this feature rely on? What are the time or resource constraints for different tasks or components? How will this affect the operation of the current features?

A good brainstorming session with key stakeholders would be a good starting point to identify any kind of potential risk to the project. These risks can later be translated into dependencies.
