Creating a process map involves defining the scope, purpose, and boundaries of your R&D process, identifying the stakeholders, roles, and responsibilities involved, listing the steps, actions, and decisions that make up the process, drawing the process map with standard symbols and notation, and validating and refining your process map. To define the scope you need to determine what you are trying to achieve with the inputs and outputs of the process. For identification of stakeholders you need to know who performs, approves or receives the outputs of each step. When listing the steps you should consider what tasks, activities and choices are performed in each step. Drawing the process map requires using shapes such as rectangles, diamonds, circles and arrows to represent the steps, decisions, start and end points and flow of the process. You can also use text labels, colors and icons to add details and clarity. Finally you should validate your process map for accuracy, completeness and consistency by getting feedback from stakeholders and verifying assumptions. Make adjustments as needed.
