1 Preparing for performance evaluations

Before you have a performance evaluation, you should do some self-assessment and reflection. Think about what you have accomplished in the past period, what challenges you faced, what skills you used or learned, and what feedback you received from others. You should also think about what you want to achieve in the next period, what skills you need to develop or update, and what resources or support you need. You can use a SWOT analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) or a SMART framework (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, time-bound) to help you organize your thoughts and set realistic and meaningful goals. You should also review your job description, your organization's mission and vision, and your manager's expectations to make sure your goals are aligned with them.

The way I approach performance evaluations is that they are not a big deal and here's why. First, I map out my own goals often and understand how and if they align to my organizations goals. If not, then I may need to find a new role or org. Secondly, I ask for feedback all year round and I keep notes of this feedback ensuring to following up on my improvements or lack thereof with every meeting. Lastly, I am constantly learning and growing. This is not just in my technical skills. But in my soft skills as well. Being well rounded technically along with having a good business acumen is important if you desire to advance long term in your career. So long story short. Ask for feedback often. Work to improve daily and never stop learning!

I've been reading our performance reviews data for the past year and great assessments from employees are the ones that understand the purpose of their roles and its impacts to the stakeholders and the business. Assess what you did to bring new value (may it be improving processes, solving problems, or bringing in new solutions to your customers or employees) and measure it against your set goals. One thing that people forget is that good evaluations start from good set goals. If your goals are not SMART, reassess that first. Once it's SMART enough, then evaluation becomes easier!

Until and unless the performance evaluator has a personal relationship with the candidate to a certain level it would be not possible to get a clear result. The person might not have been able to give his best for many reasons, though he wanted to do better. It will be best if the evaluation is based on skill and will.

During the performance evaluation, you should communicate clearly and respectfully with your manager. You should listen actively to their feedback, ask questions, and provide examples or evidence to support your points. You should also look for learning opportunities, such as courses, webinars, books, podcasts, or projects, that can help you develop or enhance your skills and knowledge. You should also update your resume and portfolio with your new accomplishments and credentials. You should also communicate regularly with your manager and report on your results and challenges, and ask for feedback and support as needed.

Regular feedback: Don't wait for yearly evaluations to receive feedback. Seek regular feedback from your manager and colleagues throughout the year for continuous improvement.
