But then there are objectives associated with the unique delivery DNA that you want to be associated with.

Is it the right time? Are there initiatives that you may need to continue doing in your current role that would make you be a strong contender for the role? Are there instances in the target role that may prove your worth earlier?

Performance evaluation can not usually be used to negotiate a promotion. Your superior is already aware of your performance. So a non starter. Also promotions are really given to make you do higher / better / superior work and not same work. That calls for a bonus and not a promotion. Promotions can be negotiated based on what u can do if granted a promotion. How you can contribute to the success of a company. What additional value do you bring to the table. That’s the right reason for a promotion. For example managing the team better. Managing additional geographies better. Or additional products.

Before you start to negotiate for a promotion, take some time to think about what you will do if you don’t get it as planned. E.g.what if you get the promotion but the salary increase isn’t what you expect, or in line with what you noticed elsewhere. What will you do? What if you don’t get the promotion at all. Will you stay? If you have thought through the alternatives, you will be in a stronger position to determine what you will and will not accept. Things don’t always go as you plan, so make sure you have a backup scenario.

Even if the promotion is not granted immediately, view the process as an opportunity for continuous improvement. Seek feedback on areas that need development, and actively work on addressing them. Demonstrating a commitment to growth and enhancement reinforces your dedication to the organization's success. Make real achievements that no one can deny or ignore. Those achievements will be your ticket to any promotion you'd aspire to. You don't have to be smart in negotiating promotions. All what you have to do is to work hard and smart and make your accomplishments speak on your behalf. Promotions come naturally when you have a bright list of achievements. You may just have to accept or reject the offered promotion.
