Although important for all genders, I think it is critically important to understand the pay range for a particular job. A few states require disclosure. For most states, employment sites allow one to enter skills, education, location, experience and other variables. Discrimination in salary is real. It’s only important to know your worth if you are willing to do what is necessary to be paid what you are worth.

Create a list of your key accomplishments and contributions to the company. Focus on how your performance has positively impacted the organization. Quantify your achievements where possible. Numbers and concrete results would be helpful. Be open to feedback and be prepared to discuss any areas where improvement is needed. This shows that you are receptive to constructive criticism and committed to personal growth.

Knowing your worth shows that you have done the work and research! Being able to provide evidence when you are negotiating your raise allows for a reference point and a practical perspective.

Make sure each point in your performance evaluation focuses on 1. Your objective, measurable contribution and 2. A measurable, objective outcome or result. Don't waste time describing complex projects. Rather, describe how your contributed to the complex project's success.

As a DNP Nurse Educator, I have tried to negotiate a higher hourly pay for returning to bedside nursing as a casual employee. My request was denied, but the HR professional politely explained why. The top hourly pay range for RNs working bedside is set on a scale. Due to me advanced education and training, I could be given pay at the top of the RN pay scale but not higher to ensure equity and respect for all of the other DNP prepared nursing professors who are also working bedside to keep current in clinical practice. Some organizations have these pay ranges for ethical business reasons despite the qualifications of the applicant. I appreciated the information sent to me and replied with gratitude in an email.

Some things are more important than money. Consider benefits, family situation, all the other aspects of your life which are positively or negatively impacted by your current job situation. Weigh the pros and cons of making a job move or renegotiating compensation against the complexity and obligations of your life. I personally do not quibble over small amounts of money that are relatively meaningless in the long run when job satisfaction is high and professional dreams are being achieved.

Working in federal government it's a little harder to get a raise. GS employees like myself get yearly step increases and grade increases based on our experience and qualifications. In the past I've used a combination of experience and by adding value to myself with certs and CE credits (e.g. I had my CNA, a phlebotomy cert., got trained to do EKGs, transferred to a department that required more skills, and recently got my LPN diploma). It also helps to show your manager through your work performance that you're able to do more while also verbally expressing that you'd like to move up the chain in one way or another. Having a plan and explanation of why you should get a raise before you approach management about it is always helpful as well
